Buffs Finish Sixth at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado women's golf team finished in a tie for sixth here on Tuesday afternoon at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at UMN Championship Golf Course.

Kent State, which led through the first two rounds, hung on for the win after shooting a 289 in the third round; the Eagles finished with a total of 858 (289-280-289). Pepperdine moved up six positions to second with the best team round of the day, a 7-under par (281); the Waves finished the tournament with a score of 863, just five strokes back of Kent State. San Diego State finished third (866), Northwestern was forth (867) and New Mexico ended up fifth (868). The Buffs tied for sixth place with UC Davis as both finished the tournament with a score of 874.

As a team, the Buffs shot 294 on the day, which was 6-over par, and was tied for the sixth best scorecard of the day. Overall, Colorado combined for a three-round total of 874 (295-285-294).

"The team started off well today and we were making good move to catch the leaders, but with about six holes to go, the whole momentum switched and we had a series of very bad holes," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Unfortunately we fell right back down the leaderboard and all the shots we made up early disappeared.

"We walk away from this having a very good idea of what we need to work on the next few weeks. We have a very solid group of players and this is a long season. We need to keep working on our weaknesses, stay patient and we will be a highly competitive team."

Robyn Choi finished just five strokes from the winner and had an excellent start to the day at No. 4, starting off with a par. She recorded a birdie on the following hole and would shoot par on the following seven holes before recording another birdie at No. 13 to go to 2-under. She stayed there for another hole before tallying back-to-back bogeys on holes Nos. 15 and 16, putting her back at par. She finished the final six holes with five pars and one birdie for a 1-under 71. Her scorecard of 74-69-71 – 214 tied her for sixth overall with three others as she moved up 10 spots from 16th on Monday to sixth on Tuesday.

Kirsty Hodgkins finished the tournament tied for 23rd after shooting a 2-over par 74 in the final round, totaling a score of 3-over par 219 (73-72-74). She also had a solid start, recording five straight pars before she earned a birdie on No. 9. As she made the turn to the back nine, she struggled a bit with four bogeys and was 3-over after No. 18. She finished her round out with two pars and a birdie for her 74.

Gillian Vance continued her strong outing at the tournament with a 2-over 74 in the final round. Her score of 220 (72-74-74), or 4-over par is her best on this course and she tied for 28th overall. She started at No. 5 and recorded a birdie right out of the gate and followed it up with four straight pars. She bogeyed No. 10, but responded with her second birdie of the day on the next hole, a par-3. She was 1-under until No. 19, where she suffered a double-bogey. In the final four holes, Vance had three pars and one bogey.

Transfer Haley Nist was 4-over in the third round (76). She tallied two birdies and six bogeys, three in the front and three in the back nine, in addition to 10 pars. Her three round total of 224 (73-72-76) put her in a tie for 47th.

CU's fifth scorer, Malak Bouraeda, tied for 52nd in her first tournament for the Buffs. She earned a score of 3-over par 75 in the third round to finish up with a total score of 9-over par 225 (78-72-75). She started her morning with a birdie and two straight pars before she tallied a bogey on the No. 9. She was 1-under entering the back nine, but recorded two more bogeys in the first five holes. The next four holes were better as she had two pars and two birdies to bring her score back to even. As she turned back to the front nine to finish her final five holes, she scored a par before struggling on No. 2 with a triple bogey. Her final three holes were a par, a bogey and a birdie.

The final Buff at the tournament, Elle Otten, tied for 56th. Playing as an individual, Otten recorded a tournament score of 226 (74-75-77). Through 18 holes, she had five birdies and 13 pars.

Pepperdine's Hira Naveed moved up five spots from the second to third rounds, to win the tournament. She recorded a 4-under 68 in the third round, adding to her 71 and 70 from Monday to score a 7-under 209. Darian Zachek (New Mexico) and Gioia Carpinelli (San Diego State) tied for second overall as both earned 6-under 210 scores.

The Buffs will have some time off before their next tournament, the Windy City Classic, October 1-2.
