Buffs Perfect in Doubles play on Day Two
September 29, 2018 | Tennis
BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's tennis team closed out the second day of competition in the Colorado Invitational Saturday in Boulder with a perfect mark in doubles play.
Â
DOUBLES PLAY: The highlight of the second day of competition was the duo of Ky Ecton and Ilana Oleynik. The tandem finished out the tournament undefeated in doubles play in the Doubles C Draw with an extra-set 7-5 battle with a team from Colorado State.
Â
It was an extra odd finish in the Doubles A group as teams that fell in the second round came back to take victories Saturday morning. The pair of teams from San Diego that should've played each other in the championship were flipped to keep teams from the same school competing against one another, but in the odd turn of events the team of Brigitte Beck and Megan Forster defeated the first duo from San Diego 6-4. A team from CSU took down the team that defeated CU yesterday in the semifinals, leaving all four teams with a 1-1 record.
Â
The other doubles victory came from Monica Malinen and Vera Markovic that closed out a team from San Diego to take third in the Doubles B Group.
Â
SINGLES PLAY: Singles play was not as friendly for the Buffs as it was the day before when CU went 6-0 to open the tournament. It was still a good day for one Buff, as Ecton continued her undefeated streak for CU by defeating Emily Kolbow of CSU in three sets. Ecton found herself down like the day before after losing set one 2-6, but the freshman rallied back to take sets two and three by a score of 6-3 and 6-4.
Â
In the other draws, Forster, Markovic and Malinen all fell in three-set matches, though Markovic and Malinen had extraordinary set wins in the process. Malinen took the second set with a perfect 6-0 score, while Markovic took the opening set 6-1.
Â
Both Oleynik and Beck fell in the Singles Boulder Draw, setting the two up to play each other for third place tomorrow.
Â
UP NEXT:Â The CU Invitational will conclude on Sunday at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex with play beginning at 10 a.m. The teams will compete final round of singles and extra matches of doubles.

POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Danielle Steinberg, head coach
On the team's play in day two
"I think overall today was a good day. Doubles was much better than yesterday; we were able to make improvements and adjustments within a day, which is positive. In singles we didn't come out with many wins, but I liked the way we competed. I got to see few of our players go into tough third sets, which is always a great measure and shows us how well we compete and what we need to work on. Overall I think we got better today."
Â
On Ky Ecton remaining undefeated in singles and doubles play
"Ky has been working hard with the right attitude since day one on campus. I was happy to see her come through another three setter and playing even better tennis today."
