November 05, 2019 | Women's Golf
KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i — After two rounds of play, the Colorado women's golf team remains tied for seventh at the Pac-12 Preview.
The Buffs were tied with Oregon State on Monday after the first round, but after the second round on Tuesday, are even with Washington. Both CU and UW are sitting at a 14-over 598. Colorado recorded its second straight 7-over 299 today at the 6,429-yard par 73 Nanea Golf Club.
"It was a tougher day but we are close," head coach Anne Kelly said. "It is the same story as the whole fall. We are close but we just aren't all coming together at the same time. It is a tough course and hopefully tomorrow we will get it going. We do have a chance to move up. Hopefully we take advantage of that."
UCLA, which is ranked 22nd, moved into the top spot after shooting a 6-over 286. The Bruins (571) have a two-stroke lead over No. 8 Arizona (573), which was first after Monday's play. No. 5 USC is third (580), No. 2 Arizona State is fourth (581) and top-ranked Stanford is fifth (585).
Alisha Lau continued her solid play for the Buffs, shooting an even 73 in the second round. She currently sits tied for ninth in the individual standings with a 2-under 144. Lau started on No. 6 and made nine straight pars before recording a bogey on No. 15. After that, she made another seven consecutive pars before sinking a birdie on No. 5.
Kirsty Hodgkins also shot an even 73 on the day and is currently tied for 23rd with a 2-over 148. Her day began making par on No. 7. She followed that up with a birdie on No. 8 and then made three straight pars before a bogey on No. 12. Hodgkins made another two pars before hitting a bit of a rough patch. She recorded a bogey on No. 15, a par on No. 16 and a double bogey on No. 17, which put her at 3-over. She was able to bounce back on No. 18 with a birdie and put an end to the trouble. She went back to start the front nine and made four consecutive pars before finishing the round with a pair of birdies.
Malak Bouraeda also had a nice round, shooting a 1-over 74. She played pretty steady with 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys. Bouraeda started with a bogey on No. 8 and made par on No. 9. On the back nine, she shot an even 36 with nine pars. As she came back to finish the front nine, she made four more pars before hitting her final bogey on No. 5. Bouraeda sank a birdie on her final hole of the day. After two rounds, she is 29th with a 3-over 149.
"Those first three players are really doing well and fighting hard," Kelly said.
Shooting a 6-over 79 in the second round, Elle Otten remained 55th overall in the individual standings. She recorded three birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and one triple bogey. She is currently 14-over with a 160. Issy Simpson remained fourth for the Buffs after a 7-over 80 in the second round. She made 11 pars and seven bogeys and is tied for 52nd with a 12-over 158.
"Elle had a tough start but finished pretty well," Kelly said. "Issy hit the ball pretty well but really struggled with the greens today. The course played more difficult. The hole locations were harder."
Washington's Rino Sasaki moved up three positions to first on Tuesday. She is sitting at 6-under (140) after shooting 70s in each round.
The third and final round of the tournament is set for Wednesday, November 6.
