McMullen Cracks into Record Books In Debut

GOLDEN – It took just one day for Colorado Buffaloes track and field freshman Avery McMullen to ink her name in the record books after finishing as the highest collegiate competitor in the pentathlon at the Mines Alumni Classic and Multi today in Golden.

McMullen started things off on the track with the fastest 60-meter hurdle race ever run by a CU pentathlon athlete in 8.68 seconds to take the overall lead from the start. She then went on to jump 1.63 meters (5-4.25) to finish seventh in the high jump and fall behind the eventual leader, CU volunteer assistant coach Carly Paul.

In the third event, the freshman threw the shot put 10.17 meters (33-4.5) to finish eighth in the event as she remained in second in the competition. She cemented her position after winning the long jump with a jump of 5.92 meters (19-5.25). She won the event by just a centimeter over CSU's Amelia Harvey. McMullen capped off the day of performances finishing second to Paul in the 800 in a time of 2:28.26, more than three seconds ahead of every other collegiate competitor.

With the competition under her belt, McMullen continues the line of strong combined events left by NCAA qualifier Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning. The two set the fifth and seventh-best marks in school history in the same meet a year ago, with Wenning's performance edging McMullen's by just two points.

Also on the track today for the men, Wyatt Rhoads and Davis Butte started off the first day of the men's heptathlon with Rhoads closing out four events in ninth while Butte is in 14^th. The two finished ninth and 10^th in the 60-meter dash to open with Rhoads running 7.23 and Butte 7.27. Rhoads kept in the top-10 with an eighth-place jump in the long jump of 6.65 meters (21-10) while Butte jumped in 15^th with a mark of 6.41 meters (21-0.5). Rhoads was in eighth after two events while Butte dropped to 12^th.

The shot put was a similar story with Rhoads finishing seventh with a toss of 11.68 meters (38-4) to move to ninth in the overall competition. Butte was 20^th in the shot with a toss of 9.05 meters (29-8.25) to move to 16^th. The two both jumped 1.85 meters (6-0.75) in the high jump to finish tied for eighth.

Competition continues tomorrow with the heptathlon along with four hurdlers joining the fold at Mines. The throws crew will start action at the Air Force Holiday Open tomorrow to conclude track and field action until 2020.
