Buffaloes Scratch Two More Marks In Record Books

December 06, 2019 | Track and Field

GOLDEN – The University of Colorado track and field program finished off the 2019 calendar year on a high-note, led by the performance of heptathlete Wyatt Rhoads jumping into the CU top-10 list as well as Gya'ni Sami in the throws.

Rhoads finished third in the heptathlon at the Mines Alumni Classic and Multi in Golden with a score of 5,061, good for eighth in CU history. The senior transfer started the day off with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.50 seconds, just a tenth of a second ahead of teammate Davis Butte. Rhoads followed it up with a strong third-place finish in the pole vault at 4.30m (14-1.25) as Butte jumped 4.10m. Rhoads held on in the 1,000 to finish eighth with a time of 2:55.57 while Butte didn't start, disqualifying himself from the heptathlon placing.

This wasn't the only strong action at Colorado School of Mines today as the Buffalo women swept the top-three spots in the 60 hurdle finals. Dani Johnson picked up the win in 8.44 seconds, just five-hundredths of a second off her personal best. Valerie Welch started her season with a second-place finish at 8.68, while Tamia Badal opened her career with a third-place finish at 8.82 seconds.

In the field events, Jeremy Cody won the high jump with a jump of 2.07 meters (6-9.5) while teammate Giancarlo Narvarte placed 10th at 1.94m. Kylee Harr placed fourth on the women's side of the high jump with a mark of 1.62m (5-3.75) while Cheyenne Cheshier placed third in the triple jump at 11.29m (37-0.5).

The throws squad headed down I-25 to the Air Force Holiday Open Friday evening and was led by a pair of fourth-place finishes in the weight throw. Tyler Sconce threw 15.61 meters to place fourth in the men's competition while true freshman Sami threw 16.10 meters to put herself eighth in school history after just one competition.

Also for the Buffaloes in the throws, Clayton Castro and Henry Carlson placed ninth and 10th in the shot put, respectfully, while Lars Atkinson kicked off his career with an eighth-place finish in the weight throw. Lauren Whyrick placed ninth in the shot put for the women and 13th in weight, while Jane Powers finished ninth and Elena Opp finished 10th.

The Buffaloes will return to action in 2020 when they host the 2020 Potts Invitational January 10th and 11th.
