Buffs Return To Action At Rebel/Beach Invitational

February 17, 2019 | Women's Golf

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team is heading to Las Vegas to compete at the Rebel/Beach Invitational. The tournament will take place over two days, Feb. 18-19, with 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second.

UNLV and Long Beach State are cohosts for the tournament, which will be played at the 6,355-yard, par 72 Spanish Trails Country Club. The field consists of 16 teams, which includes a pair of Pac-12 foes, Arizona and Oregon. The other teams are: BYU, Charlotte, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada-Reno, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, UC-Irvine, Virginia, New Mexico State and San Jose State.

"The last event was a championship field," head coach Anne Kelly said. "This one has some good teams. It will be great competition, but what we have to do is take care of our own games and make sure our team is doing the best that we can. We can't control anyone else or the outcomes. We have to take care of our business and do better than we did last time."

Play will begin on both days with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT/9 a.m. MT. Live scoring will be available at www.birdiefire.com.

The Buffs are looking to rebound after finishing 16th at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, but there were some bright spots as freshman Malak Boureada played well and finished second for the team.

"Malek (Bouraeda) has been working really hard and has been working on a few minor swing adjustments in her short game," Kelly said. "Every freshman that comes in has to learn a lot about the short game, what shots to pick, and how to hit them. She has been working hard on her putting. I am looking forward to seeing what she can do. She has made continual improvements since she has arrived here."

While everyone on the team is looking to do better, the one thing that can't be controlled is the weather, both in Boulder and in Las Vegas.

"We haven't been able to practice outside, so that is tough," Kelly said. "We should be a little more prepared [for this tournament] because we have played, but it has been a tough winter. Their forecast is not great out there. They are calling for snow on Sunday. We are just taking it a day at a time and doing the best we can."
