Buffs Start Official Spring Training

February 22, 2019 | Soccer

Colorado plays its first match Mar. 7

BOULDER — The Colorado soccer team is in the midst of its spring training sessions, building up to its first match of the season on Mar. 7.

The Buffaloes return a lot of experience in 2019. CU will have six seniors with 190 combined starts to start the year. Second Team All-American Taylor Kornieck and All-Pac-12 goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins headline the team's returners. Tatum Barton will also look to build off her 11-goal season.

"It's a good group," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "We have a lot of seniors this year and a couple players still coming back from injury. Numbers are low [right now] which is good for our individual development. We have had great attitudes and great leadership."

The Buffs will also look toward its freshman class to step up as sophomores. The group was leaned on heavily last season. Midfielder Kayleigh Webb led the team in minutes (1,726) her first year in Boulder, while Emily Groark led the first-year players with nine points (1 G, 7 A).

Colorado released set its spring schedule last week, announcing five matches. CU will host Real Colorado Boys 04 DA in the Indoor Practice Facility to open the schedule. The Buffs will play four more matches at home throughout the spring.

Sanchez adds Two for the Fall
The Buffs have added two more players to its incoming class for 2019. UCLA transfer Hannah Sharts is already on campus and training with the Buffs. Megan Short will join the rest of the incoming freshman in the fall.

Sharts, a defender/midfielder from Newbury Park, Calif., played in six matches last season at UCLA. She earned four varsity letters at Westlake High School and led her team to three league titles. Sharts was a three-time All-CIF selection and was the Marmonte League MVP in 2016 and 2017.

"We are excited that Hannah has transferred in this semester," Sanchez said. "She is a player that we recruited out of high school and we feel she still has a ton of upside. Hannah is versatile and can play in the back or midfield. She is great in the air, strong in the tackle and is composed on the ball."

Short, a goalkeeper from Mission Viejo, Calif., will come to CU from the So Cal Blues. Short helped backend the Blues to a 2018 national title. She helped the Blues to two undefeated seasons in 2014-15 and 2016-17. She also has two track & field letters from Capistrano Valley High School.

NWSL Tryouts
Former Buffs Jorian Baucom and Scout Watson will head to the Pacific Northwest for an opportunity with the Reign FC (formerly Seattle Reign).

Training camp for Reign FC is set for Mar. 4 and they will open the season on April 13. Reign FC did not have any picks in the 2019 NWSL Draft that was held in January.

"We feel that it is a great opportunity for both of Jorian and Scout to earn roster spots," Sanchez added.

Baucom played just one season at Colorado but put up prolific numbers for the Buffs. She became just the second Buffalo to record 30 or more points in a season. She finished the year ranked fifth in the Pac-12 and 33rd in the NCAA with 30 points. Her 12 goals last season tied for the second-most goals in CU's single-season history. Baucom's .60 goals per game rank second in, while her 1.50 points per game are third.

Watson appeared in 10 matches last season, recording her first solo shutout in CU's 4-0 win over UTSA. She split time in net throughout her career finishing with a 3-4-2 record. Watson made 52 career saves and boasts a .743 career save percentage.
