CU plays two in Southern California
LOS ANGELES — The Colorado women's basketball team concludes the regular season with a pair of games in the City of Angeles this weekend. The Buffaloes will travel to Southern California on Friday (8 p.m. MT) and finish up at UCLA on Sunday (1 p.m. MT).
Colorado (12-15, 2-14 Pac-12) is coming off a split in its final two home games. The Buffaloes scored a 72-61 win over Washington State to start the final homestand of the season. Freshman Peanut Tuitele led the team with a season-high 23 points. The Buffs suffered a 60-46 setback against Washington.
Sunday's home finale marked the final time seniors Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson would step foot on the home court in a Colorado uniform.
"I didn't think I was going to get upset or be emotional about it," Leonard recalled. "Then the end of the game came and it hit me. You spend four years here giving blood, sweat, tears and everything in between. To take a step back and realize that you won't ever play on that court again kind of hits home."
The Buffs' youth stole the spotlight this past weekend. Tuitele was one of three Buffs in double figures on Saturday. Classmate Emma Clarke hit a key 3 to lock up the win over WSU and then led the Buffs with 15 points in the loss against Washington.
"We had a really good week of practice," Clarke noted. "We went into the game [Friday] hungry to win. Peanut and Q [Quinessa Caylao-Do] had really good games. We just had a lot of fun."
The Buffs turn their attention to the Women of Troy to start the final weekend. CU played one of its best games of the season, resulting in an 81-76 win over USC earlier this month in Boulder. Sophomore Mya Hollingshed was one of four Buffs to score in double figures, recording 21 points in Colorado's first Pac-12 win of the season.
"We are excited for this weekend," Clarke said. "USC was our first conference win so hopefully we can match that [on Friday]. Our first game against UCLA was really close so we trying to push over [the finish line] this time."
Colorado, just 2-6 on the road against the Trojans, last won at the Galen Center on Feb. 3, 2013. Arielle Roberson led the Buffs with 16 points in the 65-49 win.
Both games this weekend will be televised across the Pac-12 Networks. Krista Blunk and Ros Gold-Onwude will have the call at USC. Fans can continue to find the Buffs all season long on the Buffalo Radio Network, AM 630 (KHOW) locally and online at CUBuffs.com/Listen.
