Buffs Tied For 12th After First Round at Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge

PALOS VERDES, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team is currently tied for 12^th after the first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge after shooting a 23-over 307 at the par 71, 6,017-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.

A trio of Pac-12 teams are in the top three. UCLA leads the field at 7-over (291), while Stanford is second with an 11-over 295. Southern California is tied for third with Ohio State and Texas. All three shot a 15-over 299.

CU is tied with Florida State and Alabama.

"This is a very tough course and we had tough weather conditions (very wet rain off and on all day)," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Our team didn't play well, but we haven't had much good preparation before this event. It's good to get the rust off and get the competitive juices going again. We have some strokes to make up and things to tighten up in our games."

Junior Kirsty Hodgkins led the way for the Buffs on the first day and is currently tied for 17^th with a 4-over 75. She started the day shooting a birdie on a par-3 No. 15. She recorded nine straight pars to stay at 1-under before she bogeyed on No. 7, a par-5. She finished the front nine with another pair of pars. As she went back to finish the back-nine, Hodgkins tallied her second birdie of the day, bringing her back to one-under. Unfortunately, her final three four holes did not go her way as she earned three straight bogeys and a double on the final hole.

Senior Gillian Vance is currently second for the Buffs after a 5-over 76 in the first round, which has her tied for 30th. After a par on No. 17 to start, she tallied a double on the 18^th-hole. Through the front nine, she recorded five pars and four bogeys to sit at 6-over as she entered the final seven holes. She made par on the next two holes and on No. 12, shot a 2 to record her only birdie of the round, which put her at 5-over. She hung on to her 5-over as she made par on the final four holes.

Sitting in third for the Buffs, tied for 40^th overall, is freshman Malak Boureada, who earned a 6-over 77. Her round began with a pair of pars on holes 17 and 18, but she struggled through the beginning of the front nine, shooting three doubles and two pars. She earned another two pars before shooting a birdie on the eighth hole, bringing her score back to 5-over. She made five straight pars before recording another birdie on No. 14, but finished strong, making two pars.

Senior Haley Nist is tied for 60^th after finishing the day with an 8-over 79. She had eight pars and a pair of birdies, but also tallied six bogeys and two doubles. Sophomore Elle Otten shot a 9-over 80 and is tied for 68^th. She had two birdies, seven pars, seven bogeys and two doubles.

Agathe Laisne (Texas) and Letizia Bagnoli (Wake Forest) are tied for the lead after shooting a 2-under 69. Stanford's Andrea Lee is just one stroke back for second.

The second round of action will take place on Monday, Feb. 4, while the third is set for Tuesday, Feb. 5.
