Forster Comeback Secures Win Against CSU

March 16, 2019 | Tennis

Buffs remain undefeated against Rams all-time

FORT COLLINS – The University of Colorado women's tennis team kept its 34-dual win streak against in-state rivals Colorado State intact after a 4-1 victory Saturday evening in the Fort Collins Country Club.

"I liked how we came out in doubles again," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "The team is embracing everything we work on weekly and the high energy it takes to be a good doubles team and it pays off. In singles, Sara and Monica continued to play strong singles. Both are improving weekly and playing with a lot of confidence right now."

Colorado (8-7) is now 34-0 against CSU (7-5) since the first dual was played back in 1975. It is the longest win streak against an opponent in school history.

The match was clinched in dramatic fashion after freshman Megan Forster came back in the second set after being down 5-0. Forster rallied back with seven-straight games to take the win in the No.4 singles match against Priscilla Palermo after winning the first set 6-1.

Colorado began the dual picking up the doubles point two matches to one. Monica Malinen and Annabelle Andrinopoulos secured the team point with a 6-4 win in the No.1 doubles match against Stella Cliffe and Emily Kolbow. CU picked up the first doubles win in the No.2 doubles match with Sara Nayar and Forster defeating Riley Reeves and Alyssa Grijalva 6-2. CSU tied up the doubles battle with a win in the No.3 match with the Rams duo beating Ky Ecton and Tallulah Farrow 6-2.

Following the doubles point, Colorado was on the verge of sweeping the Rams when Andrinopoulos had to withdraw from the No.2 singles match against Cliffe. The senior took the first set 7-5 before losing the second 6-3. Andrinopoulos was down in the third set 3-1 when she forfeited the match to give CSU its first team point.

Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen continued their winning ways for Colorado in the No.1 and No.3 single matches, respectfully. Nayar took down Emily Luetschwager 6-3, 6-4 for the first singles win for the Buffs. Malinen picked up the third team point shortly after with consecutive 6-3 sets against Nancy Ghanem.

Colorado heads to Arizona next weekend for the first Pac-12 match against coach Steinberg's alma mater, Arizona. The Buffs take on the Wildcats Friday before heading to Tempe to take on Arizona State Saturday.
