Colorado Rallies to Defeat Arizona

March 22, 2019 | Tennis

CU takes win after 3-1 deficit

TUCSON – The University of Colorado women's tennis team rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the University of Arizona, 4-3, here Friday afternoon.

With the win Colorado (9-7, 2-1 Pac-12) improves to 2-1 in the Pac-12 and have the best conference start since 2010. This also marks the first time in program history that Colorado has won back-to-back Pac-12 matches and it is just the second Pac-12 road win for the Buffaloes.

"I am so proud of the team for today," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "This is our first outdoor match, after not getting much outdoor practice time, but our heart and fight was there in full force, and that made the difference at the end."

The Buffaloes had to make a pair of comebacks today against Arizona (8-8, 0-5 Pac-12) after falling in the No.2 doubles match to open the dual. Sara Nayar and Megan Forster fell 6-1 against Camila Wesbrooks and Gitte Heynemans, but Tallulah Farrow and Ky Ecton answered the call with a 6-2 win in the No.3 double match. The double team point came down to the No.1 doubles match with Monica Malinen and Annabelle Andrinopoulos needing a comeback after being down 5-4 against the No.47-ranked doubles team in the nation in Emma Wilson and Sophia Thomas. The Buffs won the next three games to secure the first doubles win against a ranked team this season for CU and take a 1-0 lead.

"We started doubles slow but once we get comfortable out there we got back to playing aggressive and taking the initiative," said Steinberg. "This is our third double point in a row and kudos for the team for going out there and taking it."

In the first half of singles play the Wildcats turned the script with three straight wins in the No.1, No.2 and No.6 singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. Fresh off the doubles loss, Thomas defeated Ecton 6-0, 6-2 to take the first Arizona point in the No.6 singles match. Andrinopoulos was the next to suffer a defeat, losing the first set to Wesbrooks 6-1 and the second 6-4 in the No.2 singles match. Nayar, the 121st-ranked player in the nation, took a 6-4 opening set loss to Wilson. The two battled in the second to a 5-5 tie, but Wilson took the set with back-to-back games to give Arizona their final team point and the No.1 singles win.

Despite being down 3-1, the Buffaloes had moment with first set wins in the No.3, No.4 and No.5 singles matches. The first CU singles win came in the No.3 singles match with Malinen picking up her 13th dual win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Marie Van Aelst. Farrow picked up the next win in the No.5 singles match with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Heynemans, leaving the dual decision up to Megan Forster against Talya Zandberg in the No.4 singles match.

Forster jumped out to a 6-3 opening set victory to keep all hopes alive for CU. Zandberg put the pressure on in the second set and the two women tied the set at six games each to send it to a tiebreaker. After trading points to three all in the tiebreaker, Forster pushed and closed out the set and dual with a 7-6(3) victory in the second set.

Colorado rides the momentum of a three-dual win streak into Tempe where the team takes on an Arizona State team that has a losing record despite having a pair of ranked doubles teams and three individuals ranked as well. The match begins at noon tomorrow (MT).
