Buffs Move Up to 13th To Finish PING/ASU

March 31, 2019 | Women's Golf

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Showing improvements every round, the University of Colorado women's golf team moved up to 13th in the team standings on Sunday, finishing with a 39-over 903 at the PING/ASU Invitational.

The Buffs saved the best for last, shooting an 8-over 296 during the final round, which was just enough to move them past Oklahoma State. The Cowboys finished the tournament 14th overall with a 40-over 904 (300-304-300). CU recorded a 309 on the first day and then took off 11 strokes in the second round (298) at the 6,430-yard, par 72 Papago Golf Course.

"Over the course of the tournament, we got better," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Kirsty played a very solid round today. Haley managed her game extremely well making some great par saves today. Kelsey showed good signs as well. Malak had a great round going early on, but mentally needs to get used to being under par. Slowly but surely we are making progress. Overall, we are a young team and they are gaining good experience."

After leading for two days, No. 4 Stanford dropped down to fifth with a 1-over 865. Top-ranked Southern California moved up two places to take first overall with a 5-under 859. Arizona State, which is ranked 15th, ended up second just one stroke behind USC (860). Washington and Northwestern tied for third after shooting an even 864.

Just like they had done on Saturday, just about everyone for the Buffs showed improvement, starting with junior Kirsty Hogkins, who led the Buffs. She tied for 29th after recording a 4-over 220 over the past three days. She shot rounds of 76 and 73, respectively, the first two rounds, and then took off another two strokes on Sunday, shooting a 1-under 71, which moved her up nine spots in the standings. The 71 marks her sixth round under par this season.

Hodgkins had a solid start to her day and after a pair of birdies and one bogey through the first nine holes, she was 1-under. She shot another birdie on her 12th hole, which brought her to 2-under, but the following hole she recorded a bogey to put her right back at 1-under, which is where she would stay.

Senior Haley Nist also played a very consistent round, finishing the day with a 2-over 74. She made seven pars and two bogeys in her first nine holes. The following nine saw her make another seven pars, but she also had a bogey, which put her at 3-over. On the final hole of the day, she sank a birdie to bring her back to 1-under. Nist finished the tournament with a 7-over 223 (76-73-74), which is her second best scorecard of the season.

Kelsey Webster, a freshman for the Buffs, tied for 58th, finishing the tournament with an 11-over 227. She shot very steady rounds of 74, 77 and 76 to earn her best collegiate scorecard. In her final round, she was even through her first nine, but struggled a bit in the following nine with four pars, one birdie, three bogeys and one double.

Sophomore Elle Otten and freshman Malak Bouraeda tied for 76th as both recorded 20-over 229s. Bouraeda moved up four spots from Saturday with her 3-over 75. She was impressive to start her round with four birdies in the first six holes, which put her at 4-under. She had a little difficulty after that, recording two pars, two birdies, seven bogeys and one double.

Otten also had a good start to her final round as she earned a 4-over 76. She was 1-under through the first nine with six pars, a par of birdies and one bogey. The final nine was like Bouraeda's with three pars, one birdies, four bogeys and one double.

Senior Gillian Vance, who is playing as an individual, finished 75th overall. She recorded an 18-over 234 as she finished the tournament with her best round, a 4-over 76. She played very well on the back nine, making seven pars and two bogeys, which put her at 2-over through the first nine of the day. She stumbled a little bit as she went through the front nine, picking up a pair of bogeys and one double. She also made four pars and two birdies.

There was a three-way tie for first, with UCLA's Bethany Wu, Northwestern Stephanie Lau and Stanford's Andrea Lee all finishing at 7-under 209. Lee had led through the first two days, while Wu moved up five places. Lau moved up two spots for the tie.

The Buffs will be back in action April 7-9 at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif.
