Women’s Golf Set To Co-Host 5th Annual Silverado Showdown

April 05, 2019 | Women's Golf

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team will co-host the Fifth Annual Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif., April 7-9, with the University of Oregon.

The tournament will be played at the 6,192-yard, par 72 North Course at the Silverado Resort and Spa, which is the same location as the PGA's Safeway Open. "It's a great golf course," head coach Anne Kelly said. "To play that quality of a course, getting ready for postseason is great for every team.

Despite not being CU's home course, head coach Anne Kelly says it feels like a home tournament due to the connection with former Buff Emily Talley, whose parents live close by. "Her mom and dad were the ones that really helped us get this tournament started," Kelly said. "Although it's not here in Boulder, it really does feel like a home event for us."

Including the Buffs, there will be 18 teams competing at the tournament, including seven other Pac-12 Conference programs. Southern California is the highest ranked team in the field; they are ranked first in the GolfStat poll and are second in the GolfWeekly Poll. Two other teams are ranked in the top 10, Stanford (third in both polls) and UCLA (ninth in both).

"Every year we've had this event, it has been a great field and this year is no exception," Kelly said. "It's good. Like I said towards the end of the year and getting ready for postseason, you want to play against the best teams and that is what we are doing this week."

The other teams competing are California, Colorado State, Iowa State, Northwestern, New Mexico, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Francisco, San Jose State, UNLV

The tournament will be played over the course of three days, with 18-holes each day. Competition on Sunday and Monday will start at 7:45 a.m. PT with tee times of the 1st and 10th tees, while Tuesday's action will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT.  Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com and results will be posted at CUBuffs.com after the completion of each round.

The Buffs have been making some solid progress this spring despite a number of setbacks with include weather, losing Robyn Choi (who turned pro in December) and not having sophomore Alisha Lau due to surgery.

"We showed some good signs on the last two days of the ASU Tournament, unfortunately it was a rocky start," Kelly said. "In the last couple of days, Kirsty (Hodgkins) was looking like she was coming into her game. Malak's (Bouraeda) making a lot of birdies; she just had to reduce the number of bogeys. We are making progress slowly. It has been a challenging semester. But it's been good in a way to give the younger players experience in the top five, but not quite the semester we were expecting so far."

This will be the final tune-up for the Buffs as the Pac-12 Championship is next, April 15-17, in Palos Verdes, Calif.
