Buffs In 10th At Own Silverado Showdown
April 07, 2019 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team is in 10th place after the first round of its own Silverado Showdown, shooting a 13-over 301 on Sunday.
Â
San Jose State is the day one leader after finishing with a 289 (1-over). Two of Spartans shot 1-under 71s, while another was at 1-over 73. Their fourth scorer carded a 2-over 74. There is a three-way tie in the team race for second with UCLA, Southern California and Northwestern all shooting 3-over 291s.
Â
The Buffs were led by a pair of freshmen as Kelsey Webster and Malak Bouraeda each recorded 1-over 73s on the 6,192-yard, par 72 North Course at the Silverado Resort and Spa. They are currently tied for 15th.
Â
Webster had a really nice start to her round. She made par on the first hole and then recorded two birdies and one par on the following three holes, putting her at 2-under. She unfortunately picked up a double bogey on the fifth hole, a par 5. She was able to collect herself nicely and in the final four holes of the front nine, she made two pars, one birdie and one bogey to finish even on the front. The back nine went well for the freshman as she sank two birdies while making four pars and three bogeys for a 1-over.
Â
Bouraeda's round was just as nice as she also recorded five birdies. She made three straight pars to start the round and then recorded three bogeys and a pair of birdies before finishing the front nine with a par for a 1-over. On the back nine, she birdied the first hole, but then had three bogeys and one par over the next four holes. She ended the round with two birdies and two pars.
Â
"I was proud of our freshman today. Both shot 1-over, which is a good score on this course, but they could have been much lower," head coach Anne Kelly said. "They are gaining valuable experience, which will pay off over their career. Unfortunately the others struggled a bit today, but they are determined to come back strong tomorrow."
Â
Junior Kirsty Hodgkins was third for the Buffs, finishing the day with a 4-over 76. Her back nine was slightly better than her front nine as she earned a 1-over 37 in the back and was 3-over 39 in the front. She finished the day with 12 pars and also had one birdie and five bogeys. She is currently tied for 44th.
Â
Senior Haley Nist is tied for 76th after finishing with a 7-over 79. Her round included nine pars, eight bogeys and one birdie. Sophomore Elle Otten was fifth for CU after turning in a 9-over 81, which is tied for 83rd.
Â
The Buffs also had one individual competing in Gillian Vance. She is tied for 90th and earned an 11-over 83.
Â
Northwestern has a pair of athletes in the lead as both Stephanie Lau and Brooke Riley shot 2-under 70s. Seven athletes are tied for third with 1-under 71s.
Â
The second round starts at 7:45 a.m. PT on Monday, April 8.
