Buffs Move Into Tie for Seventh at Silverado Showdown

April 08, 2019 | Women's Golf

NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team moved up three spots and is currently tied for seventh with Iowa State after a strong showing during the second round of the Silverado Showdown on Monday.

"The team is continually improving and slowly but surely coming together," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Malak was very consistent today and play a sold round of golf. Kirsty is very close and just needs her putter to warm up a bit. Elle made a nice come back today. Unfortunately, Kelsey just had a couple of bad holes that hurt her round. We hope to get everyone going tomorrow and see if we can move up then leaderboard."

Northwestern took over the lead in the team race as the Wildcats shot a 3-under 285 in the second round and are now even for the tournament (576). They have a sizeable lead with Stanford 11-strokes back (587). Southern California (588), San Jose State (589) and Oregon (593) round out the top five.

The Buffs, who started the round on the back nine of the 6,120-yard, par 72 North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa, cut three strokes off their first round total, finishing the day with a 10-over 298. Overall, CU is 23-over (599) after earning a 13-over 301 on Sunday.

Once again, freshman Malak Bouraeda had an outstanding day as she led the Buffs for the second straight round, shooting an even 72. She got out to a good start by making a pair of pars before recording a bogey on the par-4 No. 12 hole. She got back on track, making par on No. 13 and then sank a birdie on the 14th hole. She finished the back nine with four consecutive pars and was even as she went to the front nine.

She earned a bogey on No. 1, but bounced back with two birdies on the next two holes to go 1-under. From there, she would make four pars before recording her third and final bogey of the round. Bouraeda made par on the final hole to finish the round. Her 72 is the third even round of her collegiate career. She is currently tied for sixth after adding in her 1-over 73 in the first round.

Senior Kirsty Hogdkins moved into second for the Buffs after finishing the day with a 2-over 74. When added to her 4-over 76 from the first day, she has a 6-over 150, which is tied for 26th. She also had a great start to her round, recording six straight pars before tallying a bogey on the par-5 No. 16. She made two more pars before heading to the front nine where she was able to make par on the first hole. She finished the round with two more bogeys, but added a birdie on the par-5 No. 5 hole, in addition to making five more pars.

Freshman Kelsey Webster dropped back a little bit in the second round, finishing with a 7-over 79 and is now 8-over (152) after a first round 73. She had a nice start with seven pars and two bogeys for a 2-over 38, but struggled a bit through the next nine with six pars, one bogey and a pair of doubles for a 5-over 41. She is tied for 37th overall.

Senior Haley Nist and sophomore Elle Otten both earned a 4-over 76 on Monday. Nist is currently tied for 63rd when factoring in her 7-over 79 from Monday (155), while Otten is tied for 74th with a scorecard of 13-over 157 (81-76).

Senior Gillian Vance, who is competing as an individual at the tournament, has shot a pair of 83s in the first two rounds and is 22-over (166).

Northwestern's Brooke Riley moved into sole position of first place of the tournament after recording her second straight 70. Her 4-under 140 is two strokes better than her teammate, Stephanie Lau, who has a scorecard of 70-72—142. There is a tie for third between Northwestern's Kelly Simm and San Jose State's Natasha Andrea Oon, who have recorded a 1-under 143.

The final round is set to begin at 8 a.m. PT on Tuesday, April 9.
