Colorado Receives Second Ever Ranking

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (5-3-0, 1-1-0 Big 12) has earned a spot in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, taking the No. 8 spot in the NSCAA Central Region poll. Colorado has won four consecutive home games, a program record. The Buffs earned their first ranking, also No. 8, last year following a loss to No. 1 North Carolina and a win over George Washington in the first week of the 1998 season.
Colorado is coming off wins over Alabama, 3-1, on Sept. 17 and Colorado College, 1-0, on Sept. 19. Their current record of 5-3 (.625) is the best ever in Colorado soccer history. The Buffs' three losses have been to nationally ranked teams No. 2 North Carolina, No. 9 Duke and No. 19 Missouri. They are led by junior forward Melissa Cartmell, who has scored four goals and dished out two assists on the year, and sophomore forward Suzy Kiefer, who has notched three goals in eight games. Kiefer netted two goals in the win over Alabama, becoming the fifth player in CU history to record a multiple-goal game.
This season also marks the first time in the four-year history of CU soccer that the Buffs will take on in-state rivals Colorado College, Air Force and Denver in one season. It is the only team sport in the state of Colorado in which these teams compete at the Division I level. Only Colorado State University does not field a women's soccer scholarshiplevel program, and Colorado College only competes at the D-1 level in women's soccer and men's ice hockey.
The next round of the in-state slate will be Wednesday, Sept. 22 when Colorado takes on Air Force at 4:00 at Pleasant View. CU then faces Utah on Friday at 4:00, looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Utes last year in Salt Lake City. The homestand will wrap up with the final leg of the "bragging rights" series, with the Buffs taking on Denver on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Pleasant View is located at the corner of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder. Admission to all CU women's soccer home games is free.
