Colorado Opens Season In California

January 15, 2020 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado tennis program heads to Fresno, Calif., this weekend to take on Southern Utah and Fresno State Friday and Sunday, respectfully.

The Buffaloes open the 2020 dual season against Southern Utah Friday at noon in the second season under head coach Danielle Steinberg. The team will look to build off the success that was had last year when the team had just six players throughout the spring. CU now boasts nine student-athletes including four freshmen.

Colorado had a successful fall season with Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen leading the way as the two finished ranked in doubles with a 6-9 overall record that included a pair of top-40 wins. Nayar was also the ITA Mountain Regional Runner-up and finished the season in the ITA Fall National Championship.

The newcomers have had a strong presence in the fall that began with Maria Campos winning her flight of the Rice Fall Invitational and finished with Sophia Derivan and Ellie Puzak both winning their flights at the Husky Invitational.

Colorado returns home the following weekend with a pair of in-state rivals coming to Boulder. The Buffs put their win streak on the line against CSU Friday at 2 p.m. and then host Air Force 24 hours later. Both matches will be played at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center and are free to the public.
