Buffs Sweep Southern Utah
January 17, 2020 | Tennis
FRESNO, Calif. – There's no better way to kick off a new season than by a sweep, a feat the University of Colorado tennis team accomplished here Friday in a neutral site match by taking down Southern Utah by a score of 7-0.
Â
"Overall, I'm very pleased with today," said Head Coach Danielle Steinberg. "First match of the season is never easy, and especially when you have so many Freshmen in the lineup. We were able to overcome the jitters and focus on our goals for today. The thing I am most happy about is us proving how deep we are this year, with everyone stepping up today, despite being a short couple of players."
Â
The Buffs were without Sara Nayar and Maria Campos (during singles play) today but still managed to pull together to win every match. Things got started with Monica Malinen teaming up with Ky Ecton in the No.2 doubles spot and earning a 6-1 victory while freshmen Campos and Antonia Balzert joined forced to take down the No.3 doubles pair 6-4. Sophia Derivan and Tallulah Farrow were up 4-3 in the No.1 doubles match when the doubles point was clinched.
Â
All of the Buffs won every set contested today, including Derivan's impressive 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No.4 singles position. The closest contested set was Farrow's first in the No.5 singles match where she won in tiebreaker points 7-6 before she took care of business and put away her opponent in the second set 6-4.
Â
Also picking up wins were Malinen in the No.1 match 6-1, 6-4, Balzert winning 6-2, 7-5 in the No.2 singles match, Megan Forster winning a pair of 6-3 sets in the No.3 singles match and Ecton in the No.6 position winning 6-1, 6-2.
Â
Colorado has tomorrow off before taking on host school Fresno State Sunday at noon. The Buffaloes return home next week for a pair of in-state matchups against CSU Friday at 2 p.m. then are back 24 hours later to take on Air Force Saturday at 2 p.m.
