Five Top 10 Finishes Keep Buffs In Second At Own Invitational
January 18, 2020 | Skiing
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS—Senior Anne-Siri Lervik and freshman Magnus Boee both earned top five finishes as the Nordic teams had a solid start to the 2020 season here to remain in second place at the CU Spencer James Nelson Memorial Invitational at Howelsen HIll.
While the Buffs had a solid day, Utah had an even better day, sweeping the podium in the men's race and earning the top two spots in the women's race. The team standings spread out a bit as Utah leads with 541 points, 71 up on the Buffs total of 470, but the Buffs also opened up a bigger lead over third place Denver, who is third with 395.5 points. Entering the day, those three teams were within 25 points and now the margin is 145.5.
Boee had a solid start to his career and it could've been even better had he not been tripped at the bottom of the final hill. With about a minute to go, he got tangled with a Utah skier, fell and lost 10-15 seconds. As it were he finished fifth while sophomore Wyatt Gebhardt taking seventh place.
Lervik led the Buffs on the women's side, skiing for the first time this season and responding with a fourth-place finish while junior Hedda Baangman finished seventh and sophomore Ezra Smith ninth to give the Buffs three in the top 10. Lervik has now finished in the top 5 a total of 18 times in 36 career races.
Up next for the Buffs is the final day of racing in the CU Invitational with the 15K women's and 20K men's classic races Sunday morning.

WOMEN'S NORDIC NOTES:
MEN'S NORDIC NOTES:
WHAT IT MEANS: The first day of Nordic is always a barometer day with many newcomers hitting the circuit. What the Buffs found out is that they're solid, but so is Utah and the Utes had a fantastic day. Sunday's classic races will also be telling as a majority of the Buffs team is slightly better in classic historically, and most prefer the mass start format of the longer races.
QUOTEWORTHY:
Jana Weinberger: "It's always good to get the first race of the season over with, you know where you stand. Utah had a great day today, we had a good day, it's a good start to the season. There's definitely still room for improvement. If we went 1-2-3 today, I 'd be a little worried that we were a little too good a little too early.
"It's a good sign that Magnus was up with the leaders, he can ski with them. Our other new skier, Ryan, is a little better in classic so I'm looking forward to him being up there tomorrow."
"Utah will be strong tomorrow, Ryan is a little better in class, and our women's team is a little better in classic."
Sondre Bollum: "We did pretty good, we always hope for the podium, we didn't quite do our job today but it's the first race of the season, we'll come back stronger tomorrow. I was pretty nervous before the start today, so it's good to be done with the first race and get it over with. We will always fight for the top spots, we didn't quite to it today, but we'll be up there tomorrow."
"It was pretty cold today, pretty slow conditions, but we had good skis today."
Magnus Boee: "I'd say it went fine, I was hoping for better, but it wasn't too bad of a race, I ended up fifth. A minute before the finish line, I came a little close to the Utah guy, his ski came into me and I fell. I lost about 10 seconds. You try to stay on your limits, I was trying to overtake the guy, I was a little close to him, my legs were like well-cooked pasta, so sometimes it happens."
"I feel like mass start is more my thing. I'm looking forward to being clever in the pack and get over the finish line first. We have to try to step up our game. Our game wasn't too bad today, Utah did really, really well but they're our biggest rival so we want to beat them, we have to step up tomorrow."
"As a freshman after one semester at CU, it went really well. Kicking off the season and now ski racing is a lot of fun. I enjoy the environment and the combination between school and sports and social activities, meeting new people.
Anne-Siri Lervik: "I'm just trying to be really grateful and enjoying my last season of skiing ever. I only have 11 ski races left in my career after today. I"m pretty happy, we had an overall team effort but I think we'll all get better as the season goes. I think tomorrow we'll be strong and we like the mass start. A 15K is pretty hard at altitude, you can't open too fast. WE have different strengths individually, some of us will go out harder, but then at the end we can help each other out."
UP NEXT: The Spencer James Nelson Memorial Invitational will end tomorrow with the running of the 15K women's and 20K men's classic races. It will be the first complete meet to finish the season. Next weekend the Nordic portion of the Denver Invitational will conclude that meet, which kicked off the alpine season over a week ago.
