Buffaloes Set for MPSF Championships
February 26, 2020 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field programs begins the indoor postseason with the 2020 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships beginning Friday, Feb. 28, in the Dempsey Indoor Center at the University of Washington.
Colorado is slated to compete in 55 events through the two days but will be without anyone inside the top-20 in the NCAA in an event. Two CU women competing this weekend are ranked inside the top-30 in the nation in their respected events, Karina Mann in the mile at 28th and Avery McMullen in the pentathlon at 22nd. Both will be seeking a mark inside the top-16 on the NCAA descending order lists, with Mann currently needing a 4:36.35 seconds mile or a three-second improvement, while McMullen needs to add 80 points to her season total and eclipse the 4,000-point mark.
Other athletes on the outside looking in that are competing this weekend include Eduardo Herrera in the mile and Jeremy Cody in the men's high jump. Herrera will need to knock at least two seconds off his mark of 4:00.66 to jump into the top-16, while Cody needs a jump of 2.22 meters (7-3.25) to get into the top-16.
The women's weight throw will be up first as Gya'ni Sami is the lone representative for the Buffs. She is joined by Lauren Whyrick in the women's shot put, Tyler Sconce and Clayton Castro in the men's weight throw and Henry Carlson and Austin Swanson in the men's shot put. Sconce had a huge personal best last weekend that puts him ranked ninth in the conference in the weight throw.
The multis begin competition shortly after the throws begin on Friday with McMullen who is ranked second in the MPSF with a mark of 3,914. Davis Butte is ranked ninth but will be higher than that with teammate Wyatt Rhoads ranked sixth but not competing.
Other athletes ranked in the top-8 in the conference heading into the weekend include Aaron McCoy in the men's 400 at fifth, Mann in the mile at eighth, Dani Johnson in the 60 hurdles at eighth, Cody in the high jump at eighth and both the men and women's 4x400-meter relays that are ranked fifth.
Action begins at 1 p.m. MT on Friday and 11 a.m. MT on Saturday. All results will be live at www.pntfo.com while the meet will be streamed on FloTrack.
