Top Competitions Countdown: No. 10, Soccer vs. Northern Colorado
March 25, 2020 | Soccer
BOULDER - CU soccer opened the 2019 NCAA Tournament with its best performance in postseason history and that first-round matchup against Northern Colorado became an easy choice for CU's top competitions for 2019-20. The Buffs did not take their sub-.500 opponent lightly and went on to a 6-0 win over the Bears to advance to the second round.
The six goals were the most ever scored in a postseason game for CU and their 18 points (six goals, six assists) were also a school record. It was an afternoon of complete domination at Prentup Field as CU outshot UNC 24-6.
Six different Buffs found the scoresheet as Libby Geraghty and Taylor Kornieck, recorded her 100th career point in game, gave the team a 2-0 lead heading into half. Freshmen Roo Yarnell-Williams, Jade Babcock-Chi and Kyla Ferry, and senior Camilla Shymka all scored in the second half.
Goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins tied CU's career solo shutouts record with her 25th, stopping the Bears's only shot on goal.
The Buffs drew a tough second-round matchup, having to play at No. 2-ranked and No. 1-seed North Carolina. The Tar Heels scored the game's lone goal three minutes into the second half, spoiling a performance for the ages by Tompkins that included nine spectacular saves.
CU finished the year with a 12-8-2 record.
