Olkowski Ties School Record In Prestige's Individual Event
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't get untracked here Wednesday and slipped seven spots into a tie for 20th place as the 21st annual The Prestige at PGA West came to a close. It was CU's first major tournament of the delayed 2020-21 season.
Arizona and North Carolina tied for the team title, each finishing with 4-under par 848 scores. Pepperdine, the leader heading into the final round, finished third, one stroke back at 849 as only three teams were under par for the 54-hole event. Arizona State (854) and SMU (860) rounded out the top five.
The Buffaloes recorded a 16-over par team score of 300 in the final round, besting only two other teams in the field for the day and finishing in a tie for 20th with Oregon. CU was just 10 strokes out of a top 10 finish, which was within the team's grasp after a solid second round effort. But the Buffs were 5-over par before scoring any birdies Wednesday, and were 10-over at the turn and never recovered.
Three Buffaloes tied for 53rd with 7-over par 220 totals. Junior John Paterson, who came into Wednesday tied for fifth and with a chance to contend for medalist honors, was undone by back-to-back double bogeys and was 5-over after seven holes en route to firing an 80. He was leading the field in birdies with 12 through two rounds but managed just one in the final 18, while also enduring four bogeys and three doubles. His 13 birdies still tied for the fourth-most in the 120-man field, one behind the leaders as they were hard to come by over the three days.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin matched his first round score with a 3-over 75, as he managed just one birdie as well with only four the entire meet, unusually low for him. He did have 13 pars, which gave him 39 overall and tied for the 10th-most in the field.
Sophomore Adam Matteson scored a consecutive 2-over 73 as he was third Buff to close with a 220 score. He triple-bogeyed the par-4 2nd hole, but did settle down after that, playing the rest of the way at 1-under. He had a team-high three birdies for the round, along with 12 pars.
Senior Victor Bjorlow had his best round of the tournament, and CU's best effort in the final round, as he fashioned a 1-over 72. He would tie for 87th overall with a 12-over 225, the only Buffalo to not have a hole worse than a bogey in the final round, finishing up with two birdies and 13 pars against three bogeys.
Junior Kristoffer Max continued to have his struggles out of the chute this spring season, as he closed with a 9-over 80, which had him 25-over par for the week and a 238 total, which placed him 120th. He had two birdies and seven pars against seven bogeys and two doubles on his day.
There was a three-way tie for medalist honors between Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg, Arizona's Trevor Werbylo and TCU's Jacob Skov Olesen. All finished at 4-under 209, with Werbylo recording the low round of the day by the trio, a 2-under 69, one of just 11 rounds in the 60s Wednesday.
"Unfortunately, we didn't play well today, CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "It was definitely a step back after yesterday's round. We can't have guys go high like we had a couple of times and need to do a better jo of managing the rounds when we aren't perfect."
"This was a world class tournament, as it was reminiscent of the old large regionals (usually 27 teams deep) with the depth and how bunched up the field is with very little separation," Edwards added. "It will be good preparation for the rest of the season."
The Prestige at PGA West Individual. In conjunction with the 24-team event, there was also a special competition for individuals that were not competing for team title. Playing in his first collegiate event, CU redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski tied for 14th after firing a second straight 1-under par 71. That gave him a 2-under 214 total on the 7,145-yard, par-72 Coral Mountain Golf Club course, also in Palm Desert. He was actually 3-over par after scoring a double bogey on the par-3 8th hole, but from that point on, birdied four of his last 10 holes with the rest pars to finish in the red.
In the process, he tied a school record for the best performance in relation to par in the first career tournament. He matched similar 2-under 214 scores by current CU assistant coach Derek Tolan in the 2005 New Mexico Tucker Invitational and by Sebastian Heisele in the 2008 DU-Ron Moore Invitational. Like Olkowski, Sebastian also competed as an individual, Tolan's effort stands alone as the best effort when the scores counted for the team total.
He had five birdies and 10 pars Wednesday, finishing with 13 and 32, respectively, for the tourney. Colorado State's A.J. Ott and Pepperdine's Derek Hitchner tied for medalist honors with 12-under 204 scores.
"Canon had a nice tournament in the individual event," Edwards said. "He has been playing really well for the better part of a year and he should gain even more confidence from such a good performance."

Colorado will remain in Palm Desert to compete in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Classic Club. Edwards has already set the lineup for the event, with Paterson, O'Loughlin, Matteson, Bjorlow and Olkowski playing the one through five spots, while Max and senior Cole Krantz will play as individuals.
NOTES: Colorado tied for first in eagles with two (just 14 overall), tied for 11h in birdies (38) and tied for last in pars (151) … The Buffs played the par-3 holes the best at 21-over, which tied for 17th among the field; they played the par-4 holes at 34-over (tied for 19th) and the par-5's at 3-over (20th) … Wednesday's average score was the highest of the three rounds at 73.98, raising the average for the three days and 360 rounds to 73.64 … This was the 11th time CU is competing in this event, the first time since the 2012-13 season; it started in the fall of 2000 for the top academic schools in Division. CU's best finish here remains a second place in 2001 … All participants (coaches and players) had to have a negative PCR test for COVID-19 within 72 hours of competition.
