Golfers Finish Seventh At Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

O'Loughlin Cards Final Round 69; Three Buffs In Top 26
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team shot a second consecutive round under par but couldn't make up any ground in finishing seventh here Sunday in the annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
No. 39 Georgia Tech held on to its lead, registering the best team score in the final round (11-under 277) to win the tournament with a 16-under 848 score. Charlotte grabbed runner-up honors with a 9-under 855 total, with No. 49 San Diego third (858) and Boise State and Oregon (both 862) rounding out the top five.
The Buffaloes, No. 72 by Golfweek, recorded their best 18-hole team score of young season, a 2-under 286, and finished with a 5-over par 869 total. One bad nine kept CU out of the top three here, as the four scorers in first round were 12-over par on the back nine in the first round. Over the last two rounds, San Diego State had the best total of 569, followed by Georgia Tech (572) and then the Buffs (573).
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin closed with a 3-under 69, as he wrapped things here with three birdies and 15 pars. The effort gave him a 2-under total of 214 on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course, the 16th subpar tournament out of 35 in his CU career. He finished 11th over, the 17th top 20 effort as well. His 43 pars for the week tied for the most in the 113-man field, and with seven birdies, played just four holes over par all weekend.
Sophomore Adam Matteson entered the final round in contention for medalist honors, and was just 1-over par through six holes and within range at five shots back. But a double bogey on No. 10 dropped him to seven off the pace. He finished with a 3-over 75 that still netted him a tie for 16th as he finished with an even-par 216 total. He had one birdie and 14 pars Sunday, and his 40 pars for the tourney tied for the third-most.
Redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski closed with a 2-under 70, which enabled him to tie for 26th with a 2-over 218. He had a team-high five birdies for the second straight round, with 11 pars, a bogey and a double. He had 14 birdies on the weekend, tying for the fifth-most in the field, and finished his round with back-to-back birds on Nos. 3 and 4. That enabled him to tie for the fourth-best effort by a Buffalo in his first 54-hole tournament where he was a designated scorer; earlier in the week in The Prestige at PGA West, Olkowski's 2-under 214 tied him for the best score in relation to par in a first CU tournament, except that he competed as an individual.
Junior John Paterson tied for 45th, fashioning an even-par 72 to finish with a 5-over 221 score. He had three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys, with two of his bogeys in the last three holes to get him back to even, and also helped CU hold on to seventh place when combined with late birds from O'Loughlin and Olkowski.
Senior Victor Bjorlow tied for 84th after second straight 3-over 75; he was a tad off his game all week as he finished with a 14-over 230 total. He had two birdies and 12 pars Sunday, with his four holes worse than par were the lowest for his three rounds.
Two Buffaloes competed here individually. Senior Cole Krantz closed with a 1-under 71, giving him a 6-over 222 score for the event, tying him for 52nd. He had three birdies and 14 pars with a double to finish here, playing his last nine holes at 2-under. He matched O'Loughlin's par total to tie for most in the field.
Junior Kristoffer Max tied for 59th with a 7-over 223 total, as he shot an 8-over 80 Sunday. While he did make 14 pars, he had a bogey, two doubles and a triple that ballooned his score, all of which occurred in a five-hole stretch between Nos. 4 and 8. His 39 pars tied the fifth-most this weekend.
"The guys did a nice job again for the second straight round," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Daniel, Canon and Cole had good rounds and were generally very solid. Dan had a consistent event overall. Adam was a bit off his game today, but did a really good job all week. When looking over the two tournaments, everyone had some good moments.
"Considering how poor the back nine of our first round was, this was a good event and we beat some quality teams," he continued. "The last two rounds, we did very well managing our games. We definitely got better this week in the desert competing in three competitions against some of the premier teams in the country. It also felt good to be back out there as a team after 11 months being sidelined. A special mention goes out to our team's trainer, Kari Kebach, for all of her coordination in helping make this week possible."

Colorado State's A.J. Ott earned medalist honors, as he finished with a 4-under 68 that pushed him to an 11-under 205 for the meet. That bested Georgia Tech's Noah Norton by two strokes.
The Buffaloes will return to action in two weeks, traveling to San Diego to participate in the Lamkin Classic, March 8-10.
NOTES: CU assistant coach Derek Tolan owns the low score in a first CU event where his efforts counted toward the team total, a 2-under 215 in the 2005 New Mexico Tucker Invitational. Phillip Juel-Berg (2012) and Yannik Paul (2013) and 1-over efforts at Air Force and Olkowski matched Morton Toft Hansen's 2-over, also at Air Force, in 2016 … No. 24 Kansas led after the first round but had to withdraw from the event due to COVID issues in the Jayhawk program, forcing to pause all activities; KU was 14-under par but had one player test positive … Colorado had the 11th-most birdies (43) but the second most pars (177) … CU mastered the par-3 holes here, playing them collectively at 1-under for the best among the 21 teams; CU played the par-4 holes at 33-over (tied for 11th) and the par-5's at 13-under (tied for seventh) … The average score for the tournament (347 rounds) was 74.91.
