Golfers In 15th After Two Rounds in Arizona
March 21, 2021 | Men's Golf
Second Round Completed Early Sunday
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Colorado men's golf team hung around even par, give or take a few strokes, for the entire day which ended with the Buffaloes tied for 13th place in Arizona's National Invitational Tournament.
Play was suspended with half the field (52 of 104 players) having anywhere from one-to-five holes to finish. The top eight teams in the standings managed to finish their second rounds, however, with the remaining 10 teams doing so early Sunday morning. At the conclusion of the round, CU dipped into 15th place.
No. 8 Oklahoma State owns the lead after 36 holes, ponying up a 29-under par team score of 547. That's good for a three-stroke lead over rival and No. 2 Oklahoma, in at 26-under 550. But easily within striking distance are No. 37 New Mexico (553), No. 4 Illinois (554) and No. 17 and host Arizona (555), the trio rounding out the top five.
Colorado, ranked No. 74 by Golfweek, had two players finish 36 holes on Saturday, with three others still on the course when play was called for the day. The Buffalos were tied for 13th in the 18-team field, standing at 3-over par with the trio of players having four total holes left in their second rounds. When all was said and done, the Buffaloes finished at 7-over.
There are four of the top eight ranked teams in the nation competing here this weekend, and eight in the top 50 overall. After the first round, Colorado was tied with Southern California in ninth place with a 1-under 287 score.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin is pacing the Buffaloes here, as he is through 36 holes with a 5-under 139, after firing back-to-back rounds of 69 and 70 Saturday on the 7,167-yard, par-72 Catalina Course at Tucson National. Tied for 18th, he had a team-high nine birdies with 23 pars against four bogeys.
Senior Victor Bjorlow closed the day at 4-over par 148, rallying with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon round after posting a 78 in the morning; he is tied for 80th. He had his team-best third eagle of the season (14th in his career), eight birdies and 10 pars, but had to endure double and triple bogeys on his first two holes of the day (Nos. 10 and 11), thus was 5-over just two in, but rallied to play his last 26 holes at 3-under.
Senior Cole Krantz, playing in his first tournament of the season that is counting toward the CU team total, opened strong with a 3-under 69, with four birdies and 13 pars in the morning. He ran into some trouble his second time around Catalina, with just one birdie, six bogeys and a triple with one hole remaining to complete the round; he made par and finished with an 8-over 80 (5-over 149 total) that has him tied for 84th.
Junior John Paterson has uncharacteristically struggled here, turning in a 3-over 75 to start his day and then stood at 4-over with No. 9 left to play at the end (he would make bogey). Tied for 91st, he had no birdies in the morning (15 pars, three bogeys) but had three the second time around the track, but eight bogeys kept him from going low and he shot a 77 for a 152 score.
Redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski carded a 2-over 74 in the morning, when he had four birdies and 10 pars but was hurt by two double bogeys. He was 5-over in the afternoon, which included two birdies but two doubled; he parred his last two remaining holes for a 79and stands tied for 95th (153 total).
"Dan had a really nice day. He was good from start to finish," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Cole had a good first round and Victor a nice second round. Other than that, we weren't consistent enough to be in a better position. We definitely see some very positive signs but just haven't been able to put everything together completely. Once we get better from inside of 100 yards, we will see that consistency."
Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart holds the individual lead with an 11-under 133; his afternoon 65 was the best round of the day. New Mexico's Brandon Shong is one off the pace and three others are two back.
The third and final round commenced at ill be completed first thing Sunday, which will be followed by the third and final round.
