Golfers Zoom Into 10th In Stanford's "The Goodwin"

Buffs post second-best team score Friday; Bjorlow, O'Loughlin Card 67s
PALO ALTO, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team recorded its best improvement from one round to the next in four years here Friday, as the Buffaloes zoomed into 10th place after two rounds of Stanford's "The Goodwin."
Colorado, ranked No. 74 by Golfweek, improved 18 strokes from its first round score of 16-over 296 with a 2-under par 278, its best single round effort of the season. In posting the second-best score of the round in the 28-team field, CU was the big mover of the day, going from 22nd into 10th place with a 14-over team tally of 574. It was the Buffs' best improvement within a tournament from one round to the next since late in the 2017 season, when CU improved 19 strokes from the second to final rounds in The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla.
No. 8 Arizona State recorded the best score of the day, and the only other round under par, a 7-under 273 to take over the lead from host Stanford. The Sun Devils are in at 9-under 571, while the No. 66 Cardinal dropped into second a 4-under 556. No other teams are under par through two rounds, as the top five is rounded out in a three-way tie among Pepperdine, St. Mary's and Washington, all at 7-over 567.
In addition, and all-in-all individually, the Buffaloes moved up in the standings a combined 137 positions. The Buffs' four scorers for the round played the back nine at 2-over, tying for fifth-best in the field, and then played the front side at 6-under, the best among the 28 teams, edging host Stanford which was 5-under.
"The guys were generally in full control today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Emotionally, they handled the standard ebbs and flows of the round at a very high level. It was a round we could feel coming – the guys have been putting in the work and put it all together."
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin carded a 3-under 67, which has him at 2-over 142 through 36 holes and tied for 29th on the 6,742-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course layout. Making the turn at 1-over after bogeying No. 17, he shot a 31 on the front side thanks to four of his five birdies; he had five total on the day with 11 pars and two bogeys.
Junior John Paterson fired a 5-over 75, and with his opening even par effort has him tied for 51st with a 5-over 145 score. He made the turn at even par, closing the back nine with seven straight pars, but found trouble on the front side, scoring three straight bogeys. He got back down to 2-over after birdying No. 5, but down the stretch had another bogey and a double. He had two birdies and 10 pars but endured five bogeys and the double.
Senior Victor Bjorlow carded a career matching and season-best score of 3-under 67, slashing 11 strokes off his opening effort to end two rounds at 5-over 145 (which also ties him for 51st). He had a team-high six birdies with nine pars and just three bogeys, with three of his birds coming over his last five holes of the round. It continued his first-to-second round improvement on the season, as he is averaging 77 in opening rounds and now 72.6 in his second 18's.
O'Loughlin's and Bjorlow's rounds of 67 were the team-bests in 2021, topping 69 on six previous occasions (by four different players). There 19 rounds in the 60s Friday in the 146-man field.
Sophomore Adam Matteson shot an even-par 70, which moved him into a tie for 57th with a 6-over 146 score. He scored the first eagle of his collegiate career on the 539-yard, par-5 7th hole, and also had three birdies and nine pars against five bogeys, two of which came early in his round (on Nos. 10 and 12), but he rebounded to finish even on the day.
Senior Cole Krantz turned in a 4-over 74, which has him a 9-over 149 as he remain tied in 88th. He was around 1- or 2-over most of the round, but unfortunately closed with a double bogey and a bogey. He did have three birdies and 10 pars against three bogeys and two doubles.
"We really had a good day today, with Daniel and Victor having very good rounds to lead the way," Edwareds said. "Adam's round was strong as well, and Cole and John did a great job of hanging in all day. The guys really competed well. The course played as firm as I've ever seen it and the team did a really nice job adjusting."
Whereas CU had just 10 birdies on Thursday, it doubled the number of holes under par the second time aroujnd Stanford's track with 19 birdies and Matteson's eagle.
St. Mary's Blake Hathcoat owns the individual lead with an 8-under 132 total, which is good for a one stroke edge over SMU's Noah Goodwin and Nevada's Sam Harned.
The third and final round is Saturday; the Buffaloes will be paired with San Diego and Florida Atlantic and will start play for the second straight day off the No. 10 tee, with tee times commencing at 1:10 p.m. MDT.
NOTES: This is the eighth time the Buffaloes are playing in the event, with their best finish a fourth-place showing in 2016 … The Buffaloes are 11th in par-3 scoring (13-over), tied for 12th in par-4 scoring (26-over, just plus-5 Friday) and tied for seventh in par-5 scoring (minus-12) … CU is tied for 11th in pars (98) and is tied for eighth in birdies (19) … The average score for the tournament (291 total rounds) through 36 holes is 73.46 (holding steady over both days, 73.49 for the first round and 73.43 for the second).
