Buffs Wrap Up Multis And Colorado Invitational First Day

BOULDER – Colorado track and field wrapped up action at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational Friday afternoon and the first day of action at the 2021 Colorado Invitational.

The combined events athletes competed well at UCLA, highlighted by Avery McMullen posting the 10th-best mark in the women's heptathlon in the modern-scoring era (post javelin change) as she finished second with 5,221 points. Behind her was teammates Jada Green in fourth (4878), Kara Lucyk in ninth (4290), Elise Gillett in 10th (4034) and Kylee Harr in 11th (3647).

The men competed against one-another, leading to a CU sweep of the first three places as Wyatt Rhoads scored 6,538 points to Nick Bianco's 6,268 and Davis Butte's 6,160.

Back in Boulder, the CU women won two events as Allie Routledge cleared 1.68 meters (5-6) in the high jump to take the crown while Valerie Welch won the women's long jump by nearly a foot at 5.66 meters (18-7) to outjump teammate Reese Renz for second at 5.40 meters (17-8.75).

The men's squad faired well in the throws, paced by Henry Carlson's 53.78 meters (176-5) toss of the javelin to finish second. The mark is less than five-feet from entering in the CU record book. He also placed fifth in the discus, but Tyler Sconce showed better with a third-place finish and a toss of 47.93 meters (157-3).

Action continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Boulder. 21 Colorado track and field athletes will be honored prior to the 4x400 relays as they compete for the last time at Potts Field.
