Herrera Finishes Out Trials For Colorado
June 27, 2021 | Track and Field
EUGENE –  Colorado track and field senior Eduardo Herrera closed out the 2020 USATF Olympic Trials here Sunday morning in the final of the men's 5,000.
Â
The senior sported the black and gold and finished 15th overall in 14:00.46 to close out an amazing week of competition for Colorado athletes current and former. Herrera will take this experience and apply it in his return to Boulder for his final year of competition.
Â
Herrera started the first 800 in third then things picked up and he dropped to sixth as two members of the 10k Olympic team made early passes. Competing without the Olympic Standard, Herrera knew he had to go out with the leaders. Paul Chelimo, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist, took the lead and pushed the pace faster to string out the race early as Herrera fell to ninth. With some clipping, the leaders began getting chippy as Woody Kincaid, the 10k champ, took the lead to string things out faster as Herrera dropped to 12th around 15 meters back. The pack started coming back together around the nine-minute mark as a pack of 12 grouped up with Herrera trailing that by a few meters. NCAA XC Champ Connor Mantz of BYU took the lead with 1000 left and started to crank out the speed. At the bell, Grant Fisher took the lead followed by Chelimo and Oregon's Cooper Teare, but in the end Chelimo took the win with the pair of the 10k Olympians qualifying in Kincaid and Fisher. Herrera finished 15th in 14:00.46 as Chelimo took the win in 13:26.82.
Â
Colorado had athletes compete in every single day of the USATF Olympic Trials with 14 athletes former and current competing. Joe Klecker placed third in the men's 10,000 on the first day to punch his ticket to Tokyo. Nine Buffs made finals in their respected events, highlighted by Emma Coburn winning the steeplechase in a meet record to make her third Olympic team. In the same race, Val Constien ran a personal best and finished third to earn her first Olympic berth and Team USA spot.
Â
Klecker will be the first Buff on the track on July 30th for the 10k final in Japan, followed by the two women in the steeplechase first round on August 1st. The final for the steeplechase is August fourth. Morgan Pearson will compete in the triathlon July 26 which starts at the Odaiba Marine Park, while the track events are scheduled to compete at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
