Colorado Heads To NCAA Preliminaries
May 24, 2022 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program sends 29 student-athletes to the NCAA Track and Field West Preliminaries this Wednesday through Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., at the University of Arkansas.
Â
The men will compete Wednesday and Friday, while the women will compete Thursday and Saturday. All of the days will be streamed on the SEC Network, available to ESPN+ subscribers. The first two days' streams begin at 5 p.m. MT while the final two begin at 4 p.m. MT.
Â
All of the athletes will be aiming for a top-12 finish in their individual events and relays. All of the field events and the 10,000-meter run will take the top-12 based on finish. The sprints and hurdles will need to advance to the quarterfinals and then finish top-three in their heat or have one of the next three best times. The steeplechase and relays will only race the quarterfinal round and seek the same criteria to advance to Eugene. The 1,500-meter athletes will need to advance to the quarterfinals and place top-five in their heat or have two of the next best times, while the 5,000 will start in the quarterfinal round and need the same top-five or next two best times.
Â
Action begins Wednesday with Dominique Williams in the men's hammer throw at 9 a.m. MT. There will be a long break until the track events begin for CU at 5:30 p.m. MT with Noah Hibbard in the 1,500 first round. Tyler Williams races in the 400-meter dash first round less than an hour later, followed by 400 hurdlers Aaron McCoy and Garrett Nelson. The night ends with the first final on the track in the men's 10,000 where Andrew Kent, Austin Vancil, Charlie Sweeney and Paxton Smith will all race at 8:10 p.m. MT.
Â
The first day's focus will be advance to the quarterfinals or run under 28:20 in the men's 10,000. There are a dozen athletes in the men's 10,000 that have run under 28:20, including Vancil and Kent. In all of the other events Wednesday, only Williams has a seeded time in his heat that would automatically advance. He is the third-ranked athlete in the first heat of the 400, so he will not have the advantage of knowing what the bubble time needed is. McCoy is in a similar situation but is the fourth-best seeded time in his first heat. Nelson has the advantage of being in the fifth heat and knowing what bubble time is needed as he is the sixth-seeded athlete in the heat. Hibbard will need a top-five mark and is in the first of four heats in the 1,500. He is seeded at 3:42 with five athletes in his heat having run under 3:41.
Â
The women's first day starts Thursday at 5 p.m. MT with Avery McMullen doubling up in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. Both events begin at the same time, but McMullen is in the last heat of the hurdles and the third flight of four in the long jump. She will know the bubble time in the hurdles, needing to probably run around 13.25 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the long jump there are 13 women seeded at 6.40 meters, so that will be the mark she will need to aim for to advance. McMullen is already heading to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, having qualified as one of the top-24 athletes in the women's heptathlon.
Â
Two other first rounds will begin Thursday with the women's 1,500-meter run and the 400 hurdles. Micaela DeGenero and Rachel McArthur will race in the 1,500 with DeGenero in the second heat and McArthur in the final fourth heat. DeGenero is the fastest athlete in her heat and will need a top-five time, while McArthur has six athletes under 4:20 in her heat including herself, but she will have the added advantage of knowing exactly what time she will need to run to be one of the next four fastest times. McArthur could finish as far back as ninth in her heat and still advance. In the hurdles, Abbey Glynn is in the fifth heat with Emma Pollak in the sixth. Glynn is tied for second in her heat by seed time and needs a top-three heat finish or one of the six next best times. Pollak has three athletes under 58 seconds in her heat but will also know what time she needs so she could finish last in her heat and advance.
Â
The night cap for the women is the first chance to advance to Eugene with the women's 10,000-meter run. Emily Covert, India Johnson, Hannah Miniutti and Kaitlyn Barthell will all race and seek a top-12 finish. There are 13 women under 33:20 in the race including Covert and Johnson.
Â
Friday's final for the men begins with Noah Bouchard in the men's high jump at 1:30 p.m. MT. He will need to jump 2.15 meters or better to hope to advance. The finals for the 1,500, 400 and 400 hurdles will begin at 4:15 and run through 6:25 p.m. with the athletes that advance. The first known athlete on the track will be Eduardo Herrera and Andrew Kent in the men's 5,000 first heat. There are six athletes under 13:30 in their heat, including both CU men, and they will need a top-five finish or one of two next fastest times. Charlie Sweeney will be in the second heat and has the same number of athletes under 13:30.
Â
The men's preliminaries close out with McCoy, Nelson, Ian Gilmore, Williams and/or Kellen Monestime in the men's 4x400-meter relay. They are in the first of three heats and have three relays under 3:03 in their heat. They own the fifth-best seeded time in their heat.
Â
Saturday's final begins with the women's high jump with Kylee Harr and Allie Routledge at 1:30 p.m. MT. 20 athletes have jumped over 1.80 meters, so they will probably need to clear 1.85 meters to advance to Eugene. Finals then continue on the track with the 1,500 athletes that advance, then Gabrielle Orie and Madie Boreman will race in the steeplechase looking for a top-three finish in their heat or one of the three next best times. Orie is in the first heat and has four athletes that have broken 10-minutes. Boreman is the fastest in her heat and has four athletes including herself under 10-minutes in the race.
Â
The 100 and 400 hurdle finals are next for the athletes that advance, followed by the women's 5,000-meter quarterfinal starting at 7:10 p.m. MT. Johnson is in the first heat with five athletes under 15:45, 10 seconds faster than her seeded time. Abby Nichols and Covert are in the second heat with Nichols the top-seeded athlete and five athletes under 15:41, including both Buffs. The three CU women will need a top-five finish or one of the next two fastest times.
Â
The Preliminaries close out with the women's 4x400-meter relay with Glynn, Pollak, Jaida Drame and Grace Jenkins. The women are in the first heat where host school Arkansas has 10 seconds on the field. The battle for the next two automatic qualifiers will be tight with the CU women needing to run around 3:33 to advance.
