Colorado Opens 2023 At Home

BOULDER — The University of Colorado track and field team opens the 2023 calendar year at home this Friday and Saturday in the 2023 Potts Invitational.

The meet will be two of three days in Boulder this season for the Buffs as Potts Field will be reconstructed for the 2024 Pac-12 Championships beginning this spring. CU will also host the Colorado Invitational later this month in a one-day session on January 27th.

Friday will serve as the field event day beginning at noon. The Buffs will have a number of contestants from the combined events squad in the jumps including returning pentathlon All-American Avery McMullen in the high jump alongside Allie Routledge and freshman Riley Burkey. For the men, Nick Bianco, Troy Colleran and Jackson Meyer will compete in the high jump while Bianco and Colleran will also pole vault.

The horizontal jumps will be contested by Aidan Christiansen in the long jump and Eva Bruce.

The throws will also compete on Friday with seven women in the shot put while four men and women will compete in the weight throw. Gya'ni Sami is coming off a school-record toss in the weight throw to open the season and will look to better her record at home.

Saturday will serve as the track event day with running beginning at 11 a.m. The meet will feature prelims and finals in the 60-meter dash and hurdle races. The majority of the sprints squad will focus on the 200 and the 4x400-meter dash with only Jaida Drame and Grace Jenkins serving as representatives from last year's NCAA Championship relay squads in the open race.

The men's distance squad will focus on the 800 and mile while the women will compete in the mile and 3,000-meter run. Lukas Haug, Charles Welch, Ryan Lindrud and Ben Greene will open their seasons in the 800 while Carley Bennett and Whitney Valenti will headline the mile.
