Personal Bests Continue For The Buffs At Road Meets
December 08, 2023 | Track and Field
Avery McMullen takes first in the Pentathlon
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado track and field program continued its early season success here in day one of competition in two meets at the Air Force Holiday Open and CRC Pre-Holiday Invite.
Avery McMullen started the day by breaking the fieldhouse record in the 60m hurdles which set the tone for the rest of the day as personal records came in all across the board for the Buffs.
"They were absolutely on fire," assistant coach Lindsay Malone said after day one. "All of the women PRd in the hurdles. All of the men PRd in the 60m. We then went to high jump for the men, all the men had PRs going into there and then in the shot put as well. I can't even total the PRs we've had right now. Just an incredibly strong performance by everyone. I'm absolutely thrilled. I'm very proud of them."
At the CRC Pre-Holiday Invite at UCCS, the Buffs owned spots 4-7 in the men's heptathlon with Troy Colleran leading the group but competing unattached. John Swabik placed fifth followed by Nicholas Bianco in sixth and Drake Miller in seventh.
In the women's pentathlon, McMullen dominated finishing first with at least 500 more points than all other athletes. Eva Bruce placed second and Riley Burkey came in sixth while setting a personal record in the pentathlon. Allie Routledge rounded out the group in 13th.
Colorado saw a ton of personal records at the Air Force Academy as well. Matt Ward, Lars Atkinson and Lucas Williams all recorded personal bests in the weight throw as Ward placed first in the event.
Gustavo Alfonso also set a PR of 11.40m in the shot put as he finished 11th. Noah Bouchard performed great in the high jump, placing first with a jump of 2.07m.
On the women's side at the Air Force Holiday Open, Amanda Opp had herself a day, setting personal records in the weight throw where she finished first and in the shot put.
"I'm very pleased with where we are," Malone said of the season so far. "We've done a lot of hard work this fall and it's showing up on the track. To have this many PRs is really unheard of, but it just shows how hard they've worked on all of the small, small, small details to show up in a meet scenario and turn in some unbelievably good PRs today."
"It makes me very encouraged that we can just start another training block right now and then we can start fine tuning some of the details of some of the technical things that can be tidied up before we start January 12th at home."
