Buffs Finish USA Championships Pentathlon

ALBUQUERQUE — Colorado track and field pentathletes Avery McMullen and Jada Green completed the pentathlon here Thursday in the 2023 USATF Indoor Championships.

McMullen finished eighth overall with 4,112 points while Green finished 11^th overall with 3,890 points. This is McMullen's fourth-best pentathlon in her career while Green moves to seventh in CU history in the event with a new personal best.

McMullen kicked things off running 8.32 seconds in the 60 hurdles, tying her mark from the New Mexico Collegiate Classic at the beginning of the month and finishing fourth overall. She then cleared her opening height of 1.67 meters (5-5.75) to finish ninth in the vertical jump.

Moving to the shot put, McMullen placed 10^th with a toss of 11.36 meters (37-3.25). She followed that up with a huge performance in the long jump, jumping 6.02 meters (19-9) for fourth in the jumps. The mark was just two centimeters off her personal best. She closed the pentathlon with a 2:21.99 in the 800, nearly a three-second personal best and a seventh-place finish in the race.

Green started things off with a ninth-place finish in the hurdles at 8.63 seconds. She then finished 12^th in the high jump at 1.58 meters before throwing the shot put 12.26 meters (40-2.75) for sixth in the event.

Moving to the long jump, Green jumped 5.74 meters (18-10), just off her personal best. She followed that up with an 11th-place finish of 2:26.31 in the 800.

The winner of the event was Anna Hall, setting the American Record in the event by nearly 200 points at 5,004 points after winning every event. Green and McMullen will compete again Saturday in the 60-meter hurdle prelims.
