Buffs Bounce The Bears On The Road
April 23, 2023 | Lacrosse
BERKELEY – Colorado lacrosse took care of business against the Cal Golden Bears here at Memorial Stadium this afternoon, winning the game 19-9.
After a relatively close game in the first half, the Buffaloes (8-7, 6-3 Pac-12) were able to put Cal (5-11, 2-7 Pac-12) away with a dominant second half, outscoring the Bears 7-1 in the final two quarters.
Colorado's 19 goals were made up of 12 different goal scorers, including Charlie Rudy who scored four times while also dishing out three assists. Ashley Stokes, Sam McGee, Morgan Pence and Sydney Zimmerman each put the ball in the back of the net twice this afternoon while Mack Moore scored her first career goal.
On the defensive end, the Buffs caused seven of Cal's 19 total turnovers while allowing just one goal in the second half. Danielle Heintz played the first three quarters in net today before Grace Donnelly stepped in during the fourth. The two goalies combined for six saves on 15 shots on goal.
"I'm proud of the team. I felt like we did a pretty good job today overall. We had a stretch where we struggled competing on the draws and struggled to get stops defensively," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said postgame. "After that, we locked it in a little better. We haven't played great in the second half the last 5 games, and today we did much better in all aspects in the second half. We need that as we head into end of our regular season."
The Buffs will look to mirror today's success as they travel back to Boulder for their regular season closer where they will face off against the Oregon Ducks on Friday, April 28th at 4:00 p.m. MT.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Colorado jumped out to a quick lead, scoring two goals in the first minute and a half of the quarter. Soon after, Cal scored its first goal, but the Buffs responded with four unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead. The CU scoring run didn't scare the Bears as they went on to score three straight goals to come within two. With just three seconds left on the clock, Jess Peluso scored on an assist from Rudy as Colorado took a 7-4 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the opening minutes of the second quarter, both teams traded goals, making it 8-5. Later in the quarter, Colorado was able to go up 10-6 following back-to-back goals from Rudy and Pence. Cal responded just over three minutes later with a goal on a free-position attempt. Similarly to the first quarter, CU scored with three seconds remaining when Zoe McElhaney scored her first goal of the day. The Buffs held a 12-8 advantage at halftime.
There wasn't much scoring in the third quarter by either side. Rudy scored two free-position goals which were approximately five minutes apart. The third quarter also ended up with a last second goal from the Buffs. With one second left on the clock this time, McGee scored a goal while player-down to extend the Colorado lead to seven at 15-8.
CU made a goalie change heading into the final quarter, replacing Heintz with Donnelly. Just over five minutes into the fourth, the Buffs had scored three goals to take a commanding 10-goal lead. The Bears were able to score their first and only goal of the second half on a free-position attempt with 4:43 remaining of the game. Moore was able to score her first career goal after putting the ball in the back of the net while being assisted by Rachel Kennedy. That goal was the last of the day as the Buffs won 19-9.
