Buffs Back at Home for Two-Match Slate

April 06, 2023 | Tennis

BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes Tennis team returns home from a four-match road trip to host two matches starting with Washington State on Friday at 1:00 p.m. MST followed by No. 16 Washington on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., both of these matches are scheduled to be played at the CU Tennis Complex on south campus.

It has been nearly three weeks since the Buffs have stepped on the court in Boulder for a tennis match, with the last match coming against Wyoming on March 12. Following the 4-2 win against the Cowboys the Buffs embarked on a four-match road trip, the longest of the season in which the team saw ups and downs throughout. During the road trip Colorado faced three Pac-12 foes and came up short against some tough competition in Oregon, UCLA, and USC. In the middle of a tough stretch of matches came the best win of the season, a 4-1 defeat of then No. 71 Northern Arizona.

The entire team is excited to return home to Boulder, especially Senior Ellen Puzak. As the season winds down, Puzak is excited to get back and capitalize on the last few matches of the season.

"We are so excited be back home," Puzak said. "We only have three more matches left on our schedule, so there's just a couple of opportunities left and we're ready to take advantage of them."

When it comes time for competing and the matches gets tight, the ability to play as one unit has become a calling card for the Buffs as the season has gone on. The improved chemistry of the team has been consistent message throughout the year from the entire team.

"I think our team chemistry has improved the most," Puzak said. "Everyone is getting along really well, we are together outside of practice all the time. When matches come we're really supporting each other and playing as one unit."

The matches will begin on Friday with Washington State coming to the Rocky Mountains with a 7-9 record. The Cougars are currently on five-match losing streak since the start of Pac-12 play. The all-time series record stands at 9-6 in favor of Washington State. The Buffs last win came in 2021 the last time the Cougars traveled to Boulder coming down to the wire in a 4-3 victory.

Less than 48 hours later the Buffs will be back on the court to host No. 16 Washington. The Huskies currently hold the all-time series lead 18-3. The Buffs last win against Washington came on the road in 1991. Colorado will look for its first home victory against the Huskies here on Sunday.

"I'm looking forward to all of our fans coming out and supporting us to get pumped and have some high energy matches," Puzak said about the matches this weekend. "Hopefully we'll be outside this weekend so we get to talk and interact with our fans too."

The Buffs go into the weekend ranked No. 70. This is the second time this year and the third time being ranked since 2014-15.

"We were ranked a little higher earlier in the season," Puzak said being ranked No. 70. "Obviously it's good to be ranked, but we're not settling to be 70. We want to keep improving as we go along."
