Buffs Tied For 14th At Stanford Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. — Colorado women's golf is tied for 14th place after one round of the Stanford Intercollegiate with a 13-over-par round of 297 Friday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Buffaloes, tied with former Pac-12 rival California, didn't quite capture that spark the team enjoyed at Denver's Ron Moore two weeks ago, but the step up in course difficulty had something to do with that.
Only three teams had sub-par rounds in a field that features 12 of the top 50 squads in the nation. No. 3 ranked and host Stanford did well on its home course and is the leader after 18 holes at 11-under 273. No. 14 USC is a distant second at 4-under and No. 12 Virginia is in third at 1-under.
Colorado was once again consistent as a team with all five golfers finishing within four strokes of each other on the 6,278 par-71 course. The Buffaloes avoided the large numbers for the most part – no one higher than 5-over – but missed out on a few birdie opportunities that could have put them higher in the standings.
"There wasn't anything that was bad today, we just didn't capitalize on the opportunities we had," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "We didn't do the best job at giving ourselves really good birdie opportunities. Our proximity to the hole wasn't close enough for good chances, and the greens are tough to read. Here you have to be in the right position. So there were a few mistakes where we just weren't where we should have been. But it wasn't like it was a bad day, it just didn't all come together."
Colorado was led by freshman Sydney Givens who is tied for 29th overall after shooting 1-over 72. Givens was even through 13, with a pair of birdies at the par-3 eighth and par-5 12th to offset a pair of bogeys, but dropped two strokes on consecutive holes at the par-3 14th and par-4 15th. She made par on the next two before ending with a birdie at the 422-yard par-4 18th to finish her round.
Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is tied for 50th after shooting a 3-over 74. Eidhagen Harrouch had a team-best four birdies on the day with three of them coming on par-5s at the first, seventh and 12th. To cap it off, like Givens, she ended her round with a birdie at the 18th.
Sophomore Vanessa Ngo is tied for 61st overall shooting 4-over 75. Ngo had the best front nine on the day for the Buffaloes, carding nine-straight pars to make the turn at even. She was unable to get in the red however, with four bogeys on the back side.
Junior Morgan Miller and Carolyn Fuller are tied for 69th after rounds of 5-over 76.
"I think we were playing a little defensively on the course today, but we'll have a good game plan for tomorrow," Landegren said. "We just need to be patient. We need to play without fear. I think they can do great things. They just need to believe in themselves."
Colorado will pair with Oregon State in Saturday's second round, beginning off the No. 10 tee at 12:45 p.m. MT.
