Buffs Open DU's Ron Moore Intercollegiate In 13th
October 04, 2024 | Women's Golf
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — The Colorado women's golf team is in 13th place after the first round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate which wrapped up Friday at the University of Denver Golf Club.
The Buffaloes shot 7-over-par, 295, and are just three shots out of the top 10 heading into Saturday's second round.
Host Denver and Minnesota are the day one leaders at 8-under, 280. Colorado State is two shots back at 6-under followed by Texas State (-5) and UNLV (-4).
While 13th place is not where the Buffaloes expected to reside after the first round, there continues to be a sense of being on the right track.
"Everyone is frustrated with being 13th out of 15," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "It's not fun when you're doing all the right things at practice and preparing properly. I can see they're so close to being so good. It's hard to see looking at the score, but I see the potential."
Colorado's main issues came on the course's four par-3s, where the Buffaloes were a combined 12-over.
"Here (at the DU Course) the greens are tricky," Landegren said. "You have to be in the right spot, especially your approach into the greens. You really have to respect the green and the pin placements. I think that can get to our group; they're eager and want birdies, but going for the pin is not always the right way. You have to put yourself strategically on the green to give yourself the best birdie chance."
Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch continued her trend of outstanding first round performances. She is tied for 10th after shooting 3-under 69, marking her third under-par first round in three fall tournaments. Playing as an individual in this tournament, she opened with seven-straight pars before making birdie on the par-5 18th.
Eidhagen Harrouch stayed at 1-under through 12, but double-bogeyed the fourth to drop back to 1-over. She shrugged that off in resounding fashion with par on the next hole before rattling off four-straight birdies to end her round.
Junior Morgan Miller and sophomore Carolyn Fuller are both tied for 25th after shooting even-par 72.
Fuller had a terrific start. She recorded Colorado's first eagle of the season on the par-5 11th and followed that up with a birdie at the 12th to quickly get to 3-under. Fuller was at or near the top of the leaderboard for much of the first round getting as high as 4-under after back-to-back birdies on the second and third but fell back to even over the final six holes of the round.
Miller made a solid season debut, not only playing her first round of competitive golf in seven months, but even a full 18-hole walk around the course in that time span. After a record-breaking sophomore season where she set Colorado's all-time fall season stroke record, knee issues hampered her spring, but was still strong enough to earn a berth at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional as an individual.
Miller had some early rust and was 3-over through three holes but settled in and played 3-under the rest of the way including a stretch of three-straight birdies beginning on the 18th and carrying over to the first two holes on the front.
"It took a couple of holes to get back into the groove of playing again, but once I got over the initial nerves, I got it back and played well," Miller said. "It was honestly the best feeling not to have pain while playing, so overall I enjoyed myself out there."
Colorado's freshman duo of Sydney Givens and Ellen O'Shaughnessy continued to show positive signs early on in their careers. O'Shaughnessy is tied for 55th after a round of 75. She struggled early on, sitting at 4-over through eight holes, but caught a birdie on the 18th and played even on the front.
Givens is tied for 64th shooting a 76 in the first round. She had as steady of a start that one could have, beginning her day with 10 consecutive pars. However, she found some trouble on the front, playing her final eight holes at 4-over.
Sophomore Vanessa Ngo rounded out Colorado's day with a 77 and is tied for 70th. Ngo had a similar start to making par on nine of her first 10 holes before a rough stretch on the front where she dropped five shots in a six-hole stretch. She salvaged a birdie at the par-4 seventh and ended her round with a pair of pars.
Minnesota's Reese McCauley is the round one leader after shooting 7-under 65, one stroke ahead of her teammate and sister Isabella McCauley at 6-under. Seven other golfers are tied for third at 4-under.
Colorado will pair with Wyoming and Wichita State for Saturday's second round with the groupings scheduled to tee off at 9:30 a.m. on the back nine.
