Buffs Trending Up At DU's Ron Moore Intercollegiate

October 05, 2024 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren has been adamant over the last three weeks that the women's golf team is 'so close' to doing something great.

The second round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate simply added credibility to that proclamation.

Led by a career-best 5-under-par 67 by freshman Sydney Givens, Colorado put together a 3-under round and in the process jumped six spots in the standings to move into a three-way tie for seventh on Saturday after 36 holes at the University of Denver Golf Club.

The Buffaloes lopped 10 strokes off their first-round score, checking in with the third-best round of the day to join Xavier and Tulane at 4-over, 580, just five strokes out of the top five. Kansas State is the overall leader at 12-under with UNLV two strokes behind.

Givens' 5-under round, which ties for Colorado's best this season, comes off the heels of a 76 in Friday's first round and vaulted her into a tie for 15th overall at 1-under 143. Her nine-stroke improvement from Friday was the epitome of Landegren's claim that the Buffs are "right there."

"We had that fighting spirit today," said Landegren who continues to lead the Buffaloes in place of head coach Madeleine Sheils who is on maternity leave. "They had a goal today (four birdies by every player) and it was constantly on their minds and a good way to keep them hungry for more. They weren't concerned about outcomes, just the team goals (for today).

"We managed ourselves better overall. We talked about being very careful on the greens, not always attacking the pin, but putting a box on their yardage book of where we wanted to approach from."

Givens took on that challenge and then some recording six birdies on the day. With the Buffaloes starting on the back nine, Givens was 2-under very early after consecutive birdies at the 11th and 12th. She remained 2-under through six before her only blemish, carding a bogey on the par-4 16th.

It was nearly perfection from there. Givens parred the next two holes to make the turn at 1-under. She birdied the first two holes on the front and added back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh to close out her round.

"I was a lot more patient today," Givens said. "I've been really working on my mental side, so just staying in the present today, with process over outcome, was really helpful. I just had a little more enjoyment out there, no matter what happens it's in God's hands, I just let loose and played."

Sophomore Vanessa Ngo also made a big leap on Saturday with a six-stroke improvement, shooting a 71 and is tied for 41st overall at 4-over. Freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy is among the eight players tied at 41st after shooting 73 on Saturday, two shots better than her first round.

Junior Morgan Miller is tied for 28th overall after a 2-over round on Saturday. Sophomore Carolyn Fuller is tied for 35th at 3-over. The Buffaloes will look forward to Sunday's final round with another to-be-determined team-focused goal in mind.

Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch, playing as an individual, joins Miller as one of seven players tied for 28th at 2-over after a round of 77 on Saturday.

"Having a team goal that they want to do together is very important for this group because they are so close knit," Landegren said. "They just need to continue to believe in themselves, stay patient, continue to pick good lines, especially into their approach shots."

Minnesota's Isabella McCauley is the leader after two rounds at 10-under, enjoying a three-stroke lead on the field after shooting 68 in the second round.

Colorado will pair with Xavier and Tulane for Sunday's final round with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The groups will begin from the eighth and 10th holes.
