Buffs Save Best For Last, Finish 3rd At Ron Moore

October 06, 2024 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Colorado enjoyed its best team round of the season, shooting 7-under-par to finish in third place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, Sunday, at the University of Denver Golf Club.

The Buffaloes finished with a 54-hole score of 3-under 861, their best mark in three fall tournaments. Sunday's round matched the field's best round of the day and allowed Colorado to jump from seventh into third in the final standings.

"Absolutely incredible," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "It was a very stress-free day. Everyone was composed, in good spirits, smiling and waving at each other. Everyone looked eager and I'm thrilled with how we finished. It was really fun to watch today."

UNLV, which carded the day's other 7-under round, claimed the team title at 17-under 847 by a single stroke over Kansas State as those two teams pulled well away from the rest of the field. Colorado was three shots better than Minnesota which shot even par, and four better than host Denver.

Colorado's "Texas Connection" led the way. Austin native Sydney Givens and Cedar Park's Morgan Miller both shot 4-under 68s in the final round, finishing with very similar cards with logging six birdies against just two bogeys each.

Givens' round came on the heels of a career-best 67 on Saturday. She recorded her first career top 5 finish, ending in a four-way tie for fifth place with Colorado's low 54-hole score of 5-under 211.

"The sky is the limit for her," Landegren said. "Her behavior from Chambers (her first tournament), serious and introverted, to now that she's become such good friends and gotten close to her teammates, she's way more relaxed and in a better head space. To get a top five finish as a freshman is huge for her confidence."

Miller, playing in her first tournament since May's NCAA Regional due to a knee injury, looked everything like the player that smashed Colorado fall records for stroke average and rounds in the 60s a year ago. She tied for 13th at 2-under 214, logging her seventh career top 20 finish. Miller's 68 was the ninth round in the 60s of her Colorado career, third all-time and just two off the school record of 11.

"Morgan struck the ball really well today," Landegren said. "She's worked really hard on her short game, and I know her putting probably wasn't where she'd ideally like it to be, but how she has come back from her injury and put herself into contention, it's huge."

Sophomore Carolyn Fuller tied for 31st overall at 3-over 219. She shot 72 on Sunday, recording an even-par round in the literal sense – 18 holes, 18 pars.

"Carolyn is really close to scoring under par regularly," Landegren said. "I know she was a little discouraged today, missing a few four footers that were for birdie, but right there you hit those and you're under par. She's playing really well. She hits the ball great. I can tell her where to aim and she hits it nine out of 10 times. That's very rare you can have that must trust in a player and I have that with her."

Sophomore Vanessa Ngo shot 73 in the final round to finish tied for 41st at 5-over 221. Freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy was 7-over for the tournament, carding a 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 46th overall.

Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch, playing as an individual, captured her second top 20 finish in three tournaments, tying for 17th at even-par 216. Eidhagen Harrouch shot a 70 on Sunday for her team-leading fifth under-par round of the season.

Minnesota's Isabella McCauley took medalist honors at 14-under, four strokes better than Yvonne Chamness of Texas State

Colorado will be back in action in two weeks at the Stanford Intercollegiate, Oct. 18-20, at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
