Reunited with several old conference colleagues in Texas
HOCKLEY, Texas — The University of Colorado men's golf team arrive here Saturday for its first event returning to some previous roots, as the Buffaloes will compete in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament that begins Monday and will run through Wednesday.
Colorado is seeded fifth in the 15-team tournament; Arizona had previous commitment to honor but all other teams are participating. The three-day event will take place at the 7,007-yard, par-71 Houston Oaks Country Club and Retreat in this city, located roughly halfway between Houston and College Station. No precipitation is in the forecast, but it will be warm, temperatures in low 90's on Monday and upper 80's the last two days.
The coaches were polled to create the seeding; the teams have been divided into four pools with matches the first two days to set Wednesday's championship round for first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 13th places. The Buffaloes landed in "Pool D" with three of its former Big 12 mates, Texas Tech (No. 4 seed), TCU (#12) and Baylor (#13). CU will open against TCU Monday morning and then square off against Baylor in the afternoon. On Tuesday, the Buffs and Texas Tech will compete on the morning, bracket play begins in the afternoon determined by the pool standings. Pool D teams will play ones from Pool A, Arizona State (#1), Iowa State (#8) or Cincinnati (#9).
Matches will pit five players from each school against each other, though most bring at least six and can substitute in and out. An individual match win awards that team with one point. An individual match that remains tied after 18 holes awards each team with a half point. Once all individual matches are completed within a team match, the team with the greater point total will receive three points while the losing team receives zero points. If the match is tied at the end of all five individual matches (2.5 points to 2.5 points), both teams receive one point.
"First of all, it is great to be back in the Big 12," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We left an incredible league to go into another one and we are quite fortunate to do so. We have heard awesome things about the Big 12 match play and we are excited to compete. In men's golf, it is a remarkably deep league year in, year out, and this season is no different. We are looking forward to getting to Houston and competing this upcoming week."
CU will be represented by seniors Justin Biwer, Freddy Eisenbeis and Dylan McDermott, junior Hunter Swanson and sophomores Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight. All six finished under par in last week's Mark Simpson-CU Invitational (Biwer was a tri-medalist), with all owning season stroke averages between 68.8 and 71.5.
The Buffaloes are off to one of, if not the, best starts in their history, with one win, two runner-up and a third place finish; CU is 57-4-1 against Division I competition to date.
