Buffs Wrap Up First Day of Competition in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of Colorado track and field program had five athletes compete on day one of the Washington State Invitational here Thursday afternoon at The Podium. 

Nick Bianco, Drake Miller and John Swabik all competed in the men's heptathlon while Eva Bruce and Allie Routledge took part in the women's pentathlon. Troy Colleran also joined in on the multis action as an unattached athlete.

The men's 60m race started the day as Colorado saw two of its own finish in the top-three. Colleran finished first while setting a personal record in the event with a time of 6.97. Swabik wasn't far behind, placing third in 7.10.

The Buffs then had a great showing in the men's long jump, owning second, third and fourth-place finishes. Bianco led the squad followed by Swabik and Colleran.

Later on, Bianco set a personal best of 11.49m in the shot put while Swabik also set a PR of 11.42m. To close out the day on the men's side, Colleran tied for first in the high jump with Montana State's Nicola Paletti after clearing 1.97m on his third attempt. 

For the Colorado women, Bruce saw a third-place finish in the long jump at the tail end of the day with a distance of 5.70m. Routledge did not compete in both the shot put and the long jump.

Bruce placed fifth in the 800m, the final event of day one of competition here in Spokane. 

The men's heptathlon continues tomorrow at 12 p.m. MT with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m. Field events are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by the running events at 4 p.m.
