Buffs Set for ‘Last Chance’ Meet as Indoor Season Winds Down

February 22, 2024 | Track and Field

BOULDER – The Colorado men's and women's track and field teams are headed to Seattle, Wash. this weekend to compete in the Buffaloes' final meet before the NCAA indoor track and field championships on March 8-9.

"While almost all other teams have conference championships this weekend, we have this meet to use as a 'last chance' opportunity, and to further our preparation for the outdoor season," said head coach Mark Wetmore ahead of the meet.

The Ken Shannon Last Chance is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. MT on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor. It is the first time this season that Colorado's entire team will travel and compete in the same meet.

The women's pentathlon will take place on day one while the men's heptathlon will start on Friday and continue into day two on Saturday.

The action in Seattle will mark the first time the Buffs' distance runners will have competed since the Colorado Invitational on February 2-3. With one more shot to qualify for the indoor championships, the Buffs hope to send a handful of athletes between all event groups to Boston, Mass. in March.

"Abbey Glynn and Avery McMullen are not yet qualified for the nationals although their current performances are strong," Wetmore stated. "We will hope that those marks stay in the top 16 after the weekend. My guess is that they will."

"Our next most likely qualifier would be Ella Baran in either the 3K or 5K. She will try this Friday. Also, we'll be running our best women's 4x400-meter relay team, which will certainly threaten our school record and have a decent shot at a qualifying mark."

Colorado has seen several school records broken this season with the majority coming from Glynn and McMullen. At the Texas Tech Jarvis Scott Open, Glynn set two school records in the 400-meter and 600-yard races. Earlier in the season McMullen broke school records in the long jump and 60-meter hurdles. She just recently extended her record in the long jump at the Mines Pre-Classic.

The Buffs are looking to capitalize on this last meet in Seattle to gain some momentum heading into the indoor championships and as the outdoor season approaches.
