No. 51 Buffs Drop First Conference Match to No. 29 Washington
March 15, 2024 | Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 51 Colorado Buffaloes lost its first conference game of the season to No. 29 Washington 4-1 Friday afternoon at Bill Quillian Stadium.
Colorado (12-2, 1-1) got off to a fast start in doubles against Washington (11-6, 1-2) getting a win at No. 3 doubles from Ema Bubalo and Ema Nelson to take the early advantage.
Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1 doubles over the No. 55 duo in the nation Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen. This was the first ranked win as a pairing for El Sayed and Rebec, the second for the Buffs with the first coming from Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura against Stanford at the ITA Kickoff.
The singles lineup looked a little different than the last few matches with Betina Tokac out due to injury. Alexandra Abyasova and Rebec moved up a spot to No. 4 and No. 5 singles and Carri Hayes joined the lineup at No. 6 singles.
The Huskies featured the No. 67 ranked singles player in Jacobs at the No. 2 spot against Ventura. Despite going down early in the first set Ventura clawed back to tie the set at five before Jacobs rattled off eight straight games to tie the match for Washington.Â
Washington extended its lead with a win at No. 4 singles, and it looked like the match was going to quickly be over, but the Buffs began to slowly get themselves back into the match.Â
Colorado found themselves in the third set of three matches, El Sayed at No. 1, Stanojevic at No. 3, and Rebec at No. 5. Rebec and Stanojevic had to battle back after dropping the first set but took the second set to force the third set.
At No. 6 singles Hayes was trying to force a third set of her own after losing the first set and was almost there sitting in a second set tiebreaker, but fell just short.Â
With three matches in the third set, Stanojevic found herself tied at four games apiece against Astrid Olsen. Despite the comeback attempt, Olsen won the final two games to clinch the match for Washington 4-1.
"Tough result for our squad today and credit to Washington," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Really proud of the way our team fought and competed. We created a lot of opportunities but unfortunately weren't able to capitalize on enough of them. We continue to learn how resilient our group is and look forward to another great opportunity on Sunday against a good Washing State team."
The loss snaps the 11-match win streak that started back on January 27 against UNLV. This tied the longest streak in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Getting the afternoon started Bubalo and Nelson added their second Pac-12 win as a duo over Catherine Gagnon and Melissa Sakar 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
- El Sayed and Rebec wanted to get out to a fast start against the No. 55 duo in the country Jacobs and Olsen and they did just that and more winning the match 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and clinching the doubles point for Colorado.
- Stanojevic and Ventura's match was unfinished at No. 2 doubles against Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda.
- At No. 2 singles Ventura had to battle against the No. 67 ranked singles player in Jacobs, and during the first set she was going blow for blow. After tying the set at five Jacobs took control winning the final eight games en route to a 7-5, 6-0 win to tie the match at one.
- Washington's Sakar extended the lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Abyasova.
- In her first match since February 4 against Wyoming, Hayes was very close to forcing a third set against Gagnon at No. 6 singles. After tying the match at six to force a tiebreaker, the final point was back and forth but ended in the Husky's favor finishing 6-3, 7-6(6).
- With three sets remaining Stanojevic had to win to keep the match alive at No. 3 singles against Olsen. After losing the first set 6-1, Stanojevic came out firing in the second set, winning the first four games en route to a 6-2 second set, forcing a third. Unlike the first two sets, the final was neck and neck the entire way finding its way to a 4-4 tie. The final two games would go to the Huskies clinching the match 4-1.
- El Sayed and Rebec's matches were left unfinished in the third set with both leading 2-1.
The Buffs will close out the weekend in Pullman against Washington State on Sunday at Noon.Â
