Under Par Round Vaults Buffs To 12th At PING/ASU Invitational

March 30, 2024 | Women's Golf

PHOENIX — Colorado women's golf recorded its best round of the spring, vaulting three spots to finish in a tie for 12th place at the PING/ASU Invitational at the Papago Golf Course on Saturday.

The Buffaloes shot 1-under 287 in the final round to jump from 15th to tie with No. 6 USC at 13-over 897. The under-par round was Colorado's first of the spring season and fifth-best overall team mark in 2023-24.

No. 11 Northwestern won the team title at 11-under 853 by three strokes in a stacked field that featured eight teams ranked in the top 20 and 14 of the top 50 in the country. No. 4 UCLA, No. 13 Arizona State and No. 27 California finished in a three-way tie for second at 8 under.

Colorado, which had shot 7 over in each of the first two rounds, landed one of six under-par rounds of the day. The Buffaloes had a total of 16 birdies in the final round and three golfers finished their rounds at par or better.

Colorado stayed right around the even line for the majority of the day. As in the first two rounds, the Buffaloes got off to a good start. With a shotgun start between the 11th and 15th, the Buffaloes got through the 18th at 2 under. Unlike the first two rounds, Colorado didn't have a steep drop off after the turn. The Buffaloes' four scoring golfers played a solid front side at 1 over.

Weather conditions weren't helping either. Nearly half-way through the round, the winds picked up gusting over 30 miles an hour.

"The wind really started howling with about 10 holes to go," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The stretch of holes 4 to 6 played very tough all week and Saturday we played those in the wind. We also had to finish on 11 and 13, which are also extremely challenging in the wind."

Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch capped off an impressive week with back-to-back rounds of 70 to claim Colorado's low 54-hole score at even-par 216, just one stroke off a top 20 finish as she and eight others tied for 21st. Eidhagen Harrouch got to 2 under quickly with birdies at the par-4 12th and par-5 15th. She had her lone hiccup of the round with a bogey-5 on the 16th, but made par on 11 of the last 12 holes and added a birdie at the par-4 7th.

Sophomore Morgan Miller tied for 43rd overall at 5-over 221 after shooting her best of three rounds on Saturday with a 71. Miller got in the red quickly with three birdies in a four-hole stretch including back-to-back at the par-3 17th and par-4 18th. She played the last 13 holes at 2 over, with 11 pars, good enough to secure her team-best 13th under par round of the season.

Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding had her best round in four tournaments with an even-par 72 on Saturday. Waxer-Gooding had Colorado's most birdies on the day with six, but lost three strokes with a tough triple at the par-4 7th. Still, she bounced back with a clean round the rest of the way, which included three-straight birdies from the 9th through 11th to finish off her third round of par or better on the season.

Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal finished tied for 49th, one shot behind Miller at 6-over 222 after carding a 74 in the final round. Senior Hailey Schalk finished tied for 79th overall at 13-over 229.

"It was nice to see Maria hit her stride," Kelly said. "Morgan played much better today as well. Lauren played well today, even with the triple bogey, she fought her way back and showed a lot of determination.

"Overall we played much more solid golf. Even with the improvement, the team overall felt they left some shots out there. We're all looking forward to our tournament in Napa to see if we can keep improving."

Colorado will return to action by hosting the Chevron Silverado Showdown, April 8-10, at the Silverado Country Club in Napa, Calif.
