McDermott Advances Into Match Play At U.S. Amateur

Two other Buffaloes play well but come up just short

CHASKA, Minn. — University of Colorado senior Dylan McDermott had advanced out of stroke play into the Round of 64 match play portion of the 124th U.S. Amateur, as he tied for 31st with a 1-under 141 total over two rounds.

McDermott is officially seeded 44th, as he was among a 21-way tie for the 32nd position.  He drew 21-seed Luke Clanton, the hottest amateur in the world, in his first round of match play.  Clanton, of Hialeah, Fla., and a junior at Florida State, is currently ranked third in the WAGR (World Amateur Golf Ranking), and is expected to take over the top spot when the new rankings come out Wednesday.  He has finished in the top 10 in three PGA Tour events this summer, including finishing second in the John Deere Classic and was the second low amateur in the U.S. Open.

Clanton turned in a 69-70—139 effort here and tied for 19th with three others; McDermott posted scores of 67 and 74 in making it out of stroke play.  The two will start their duel at 8:40 a.m. MDT on the 7,548-yard, par-72 Hazeltine National Golf Club course; CU associate head coach Derek Tolan is in Minnesota with McDermott.

This is the third time McDermott has qualified to play in the world's most prestigious amateur event, and the second time he has advanced out of the stroke play competition; he did so in 2023 but lost 1-up in the first round to Auburn's Jackson Koivun, who has since risen to be the second ranked amateur in the world.  McDermott joined Tolan, Steve Irwin and Scott Petersen as three-time Buffalo participants in the event, which numbers 54 all-time from the school.

Sophomores Brandon Knight and Ty Holbrook played well but came up just short.  Knight finished 1-over with a 73-70—143 scorecard, and at one juncture looked like he could make a playoff to advance, as he was tied for as high as 66th late in the day and eventually tied for 68th.  Holbrook finished with a 70-76—146 score, which tied him for 137th, still impressive in the 312-man field.

NOTES: There will be a 14-way playoff for the final 11 sports that will commence at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning; they tied for 53rd with even-par totals … Senior Justin Biwer was in Chaska, as he was the fifth alternate out of the second qualifying round, but all who had qualified notified the USGA they were either in town or on their way there … Classes start at the university on Monday, Aug. 26, with the Buffaloes set to open the 2024-25 season in Washington State's Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, scheduled for Sept. 10-11.
