Buffs Finish Eighth At Leadership And Golf Invite
September 17, 2024 | Women's Golf
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Colorado women's golf couldn't overcome a slow start, dropping six spots to finish eighth at the 2024 Leadership & Golf Invitational at the Chambers Bay Golf Course.
The Buffaloes finished the tournament at 20-over-par, 884. A day after playing 36 holes in the red at 3-under, and only three shots out of the lead, Colorado was 23-over in the final round, still landing in the top half of the 16-team invitational.
The scoring holes didn't materialize for the Buffaloes early on, netting just a pair of birdies collectively on the front nine. Colorado stayed even for the first three holes, before hitting the first bump in the middle of the front, playing No. 4 through No. 6 at 10-over before eventually making the turn at 14-over.
Colorado played a little better on the back, particularly on the par 4s, collecting eight of its nine birdies on those holes, closing out the round at 9-over on that side.
Colorado was by no means the only team with struggles on the day. Cooler temperatures – in the low to mid 50s – and windy conditions contributed to double-figure over-par rounds by 10 of 16 teams. Preseason No. 2 ranked USC took the team title by nine strokes over Grand Canyon. The Trojans were even on the day while Grand Canyon had the only sub-par round at 3-under, jumping four spots into the runner up position.
"It was a cold and windy day and on top of that it was just tougher playing conditions, so I think that impacted everybody," CU assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "Coming into (today), everyone was really excited for being in the position that we were in, playing that well the first two rounds. I think it can be easy to get ahead of yourself, that definitely played a little bit of a factor.
"For us now, it just comes with maturity and learning to handle those situations under pressure. Being able to know that the conditions are playing hard, scores are going to be high, 'how can I play with these disadvantages and minimize my mistakes.' We have to practice and put our team in those situations so they can get better at it."
Colorado was led by senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch who, despite a 77 in the final round, finished in a three-way tie for eighth place at 2-under, 214. It was her first Top 10 finish as a Buffalo and her low 54-hole score in NCAA Division I competition.
Freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy closed out her first collegiate tournament with a 77, finishing just one shot outside the top 20, ending in a six-way tie for 22nd place at 4-over, 220. Classmate Sydney Givens tied for 41st at 10-over, 226.
Sophomore Carolyn Fuller tied for 34th overall at 8-over, 224. Fuller matched Eidhagen Harrouch and O'Shaughnessy for the team's best round of the day with a 77 and led the Buffaloes with four birdies. Classmate Francesca Sumcad finished 73rd overall at 18-over, 234.
"I'm proud of everyone, regardless of how we finished," Landegren said. "There are a lot of great takeaways. The whole team hit shots at times under pressure when they needed to pull them off. There's a lot more good to take away then bad. Unfortunately, our mistakes were a little to big today. The freshmen did a great job for their first tournament, it was a success."
San Francisco's Riana Mission and USC's Catherine Park tied for medalist honors at 8-under, 208. Park had the low round of the day with a 68, and the only one in the 60s, to catch Mission for the individual title.
Colorado returns to action next week at the Colonel Wollenberg Ram Classic, Sept. 23-24, at Ptarmigan Golf Course in Fort Collins.
