Buffs Open Season With A Bang
September 16, 2024 | Women's Golf
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Feeling relaxed, positive and simply having fun led to a very solid beginning for the 2024-25 edition of the Colorado women's golf team.
The Buffaloes recorded a 36-hole score of 3-under-par, 573, good enough for second place through two rounds of the season-opening Leadership & Golf Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
With the effort, Colorado finds itself just two strokes off the lead heading into Tuesday's final round, trailing former Pac-12 Conference rival Southern California at 5-under.
"From the moment we started traveling for this tournament I could tell as a team everyone was on the same wavelength," said Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren who is leading the Buffaloes' effort as head coach Madeleine Sheils is out on maternity leave. "Everyone was very positive. There was no real sense of anxiety or tension."
Colorado held the lead after the first 18 holes thanks to a phenomenal start, collectively recording 14 birdies over the course of the first nine holes. The Buffaloes climbed as high as 12-under par at one point, before finishing off the round at 6-under, 282.
Colorado cooled off over the last 18 holes, dropping back to second place with a respectable 3-over 291 in the second round. The Trojans, ranked No. 2 in the Women's Golf Coaches Association Preseason Poll, needed the day's best round over the second 18 holes at 7-under to overtake Colorado for the lead.
Colorado and USC were the only teams to stay in the red through the first two rounds. Oregon State is in third at even par, followed by San Diego State (+1) and Gonzaga (+5).
"We've put in a lot of work and are excited to be here," Landegren said. "The culture of this team, you can just tell that everyone is on board with each other. Everyone is communicating, waving and signaling 'birdie' or 'par', laughing and being positive. It's really fun to watch and work with."
The Buffaloes were led by senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch who is in second place overall at 7-under, 137, just two strokes behind San Francisco's Riana Mission (-9) on the individual leaderboard.
Eidhagen Harrouch held the tournament lead for most of the first round thanks to a near-perfect beginning. Starting from the No. 10 tee, Eidhagen Harrouch had five birdies and four pars on the back for a score of 30 at the turn, the second-best nine-hole mark in team history. She managed to get to 6-under through 15 before her lone hiccups – a pair of bogeys on the seventh and ninth – dropped her into a tie for the lead after the first round with a 67.
"I was very happy with my day," Eidhagen Harrouch said. "It all just flowed from the start and my first nine holes felt very easy. I'm hitting it great off the tee and found my approach shots and putting here and there. I'm excited that we are in second as a team and we will go out and have so much fun (Tuesday). The course was amazing and the weather too, so it was a great day."
The back nine wasn't as kind in the second round, as Eidhagen Harrouch shot that same span at 1-over, but she never lost sight of the overall lead. She rallied on the front with four birdies in a five-hole stretch heading into the clubhouse to finish the day with a 2-under round of 70.
"She played really well," Landegren said. "I've only known her a few months, but can tell she's a passionate and intense player in a good way. We had a lot of good dialogue; reading greens together and vibed really well doing that. For her, it's really trusting her process and not getting ahead of herself. She's an incredible ball striker and flowed really well. Once she's committed, she can hit any shot she wants, and you saw the difference today."
While Eidhagen Harrouch began her final collegiate season with a bang, the Buffaloes also got a great look at the future with a pair of outstanding debuts.
Freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 12th at 1-under, three shots out of the top 10. She had an opener to remember, carding a 69 in the first round, tying for the fourth-best score in a Buffaloes debut. O'Shaughnessy was flawless at the beginning, shooting 3-under on the back nine. She had a pair of bogeys on the front, but answered both with a birdie on the next hole to keep her score intact.
O'Shaughnessy finished the long day with a 74 in the second round.
Freshman Sydney Givens is tied for 23rd at 2-over after shooting matching rounds of 73 in her first collegiate tournament. Much like Eidhagen Harrouch and O'Shaughnessy, Givens had a strong start on the back nine at 2-under thanks to consecutive birdies at the par-4 12th and 13th. She stayed at 2-under at 12, but dropped three strokes down the stretch to finish at 1-under.
Givens' second round started slow, as she was 4-over through five, but rallied to get back to even with four birdies over the next nine before finishing with her second-straight 73.
Sophomore Carolyn Fuller is in a four-way tie for 27th at 3-over, one shot behind Givens and two outside the top 20. Fuller shot her second-best round as a Buffalo to open the day at 1-over 73 before shooting a 74 in the second round.
Sophomore Francesca Sumcad is tied for 66th at 10-over. She shook off a tough first round of 80, knocking off six strokes to shoot 2-over, 74, in the second round.
Colorado will pair with old conference foes USC and Oregon State in the leaders groupings for Wednesday's final round with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT. The groupings will begin between holes No. 1 and No. 3.
