Colorado Renews Rivalry with Kansas: Five Things to Know
September 28, 2024 | Soccer
BOULDER — The No. 16 Colorado Buffaloes welcome in old-time rival Kansas to conclude the weekend on Sunday at Prentup Field.
Sunday is the Buffs' annual Kick Out Cancer match. The team will wear pink warmups during pregame and pink accessories throughout the match. Fans are also encouraged to donate new or like-new winter clothing items to the Porchlight Family Justice Center.
Colorado (9-1-1, 3-0-1 Big 12) sits in the second slot of the conference rankings following its 1-1 draw to Baylor on Thursday. The result snapped the Buffs' eight-game winning streak and dropped CU one point behind West Virginia in the Big 12 standings.
Kansas (5-3-3, 2-2-0 Big 12) opened its week with a 4-0 win over UCF in Lawrence. The win pushed the Jayhawks past their win total from a season ago, finishing the 2023 season 4-8-6.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
Five Things to Know
- The Buffs have put together a nine-game unbeaten streak, having not lost a match since Aug. 18. The streak is tied for the fourth longest in program history. CU has had three previous streaks of nine, with the last happening over two seasons from Oct. 31, 2021 – Sept. 8, 2022. The last time the Buffs had a nine-game unbeaten streak in the same season was in 2018, when they set the program record with a 16-match unbeaten stretch.
- CU's 3-0-1 start to the Big 12 season is its best conference start since going 4-0-2 to open the Pac-12 season in 2018.
- Shyra James returned to the lineup Thursday night against Baylor and scored her 46th career goal. She is one point shy of becoming the second CU player to reach 100 career points. She trails only Taylor Kornieck's program record of 102 career points.
- Colorado leads the Big 12 in shots per game with 18.9 (15th NCAA). CU has twice hit a season-high with 26 shots against Denver and Baylor. The Buffs have five games this season with 20 or more shots.
- Sunday will be the first meeting between the Jayhawks and Buffs since 2016. Kansas has won the last two meetings in the series. Colorado's last win over KU was a 2-1 result in overtime on Oct. 25, 2010.
