Buffs Open the 2025 Season at Air Force

January 16, 2025 | Tennis

BOULDER—After a short trip south to Colorado Springs, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will play Air Force in the first official match on Friday at the AFA Tennis Courts.

The 2025 season will continue but also officially start for the Buffs as they take on the Falcons. Last weekend the Buffs participated in the Northwestern Tournament against Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, and the host Northwestern. They competed against each team in a dual-like format, but they did not count towards the overall team record.

While the season is continuing this weekend, the first official match will take place Friday at 5:00 p.m. on the road against Air Force.

"Our team is excited to compete," head coach Anthony Pham said on the weekend. "It was good to get some high-level matches in last weekend at the Northwestern Tournament. It is different now because it's go time, it really counts. The team is excited about being able to compete. It's nice we are on the road at Air Force, so we'll get tested right away."

In what will be the first match of the season for both teams, getting off to a fast start to the season will be important. Colorado is looking to win its first match of the season for the third straight year.

Pham is looking for his team to improve in doubles from last weekend, "We have to do a better job playing doubles overall this weekend. That's been a point of emphasis for us. We know we can put three or four very good teams out there. It just comes down to executing, it's something we've talked about and worked on a lot. That's going to be a big emphasis for us."

The three doubles teams that took the court last weekend included the No. 21 ranked duo in the country Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson who through the fall and first weekend of the spring have gone 13-1 this season. Their lone loss came against the No. 12 ranked pair Jade Otaway and Isabel Pascual from TCU in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships.

The other two pairings of Aya El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic and Lera Alexin and Pia Rebec have had limited experience together on the court with neither having played in a dual match together. They will look to grow together as the season progresses.

Following the season-opening match against Air Force the team will return home and play their home opener against another in-state opponent in Denver on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. hosted at the Meadows Club.
