Knight, Paxton Pace Five Buffalo Finishers In Top 13
STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team held its position here Saturday in the final round in finishing second in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, the Buffaloes fourth top three finish in as many tries this fall.
Host Pacific wasn't challenged after taking a 13-stroke lead through 36 holes, finishing with a 20-shot win with a 47-under par team score of 817. The Buffaloes shot under par for a third straight round but wrapped things with a 27-under 837. San Diego (842), UC San Diego (856) and Sacramento State (856) rounded out the top five.
In four events this fall, the Buffaloes have two second place and two third place finishes. And for the second time this year – and the 35th in school history – the Buffaloes placed at least three finishers in the top 10 of a major tournament. Pacific placed all five of its scorers in the top 20 to keep CU at bay, as the Buffs had four scorers in the top 13, along with an individual playing separately.
Junior Brandon Knight and sophomore Parker Paxton topped CU here this week, tying for fifth with 7-under par 209 scores on the 7,189-yard, par-72 course at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Knight, who was in second place one back after a career-best 135 through 36 holes, closed with a 2-over 74. He bogeyed No. 1 to start his day, but after four straight pars, a birdie on the No. 6 brought him back to even. He did the "1-over/even" dance for the next eight holes until he double-bogeyed the 179-yard, par-3 15th to fall back to plus-3; after birdying Nos. 16 and 17, he finished with a bogey. He thus had four birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and the double – the latter just his third in 12 rounds (216 holes) this season. Overall, he had an eagle, 14 birdies and 31 pars with seven bogeys and the double, and played the par-5's the best at 7-under, tied for fourth-best in the 96-man field.
Paxton closed with a 1-over 71, his round featuring three birdie and a team-high 14 pars with two double bogeys (just his third of the season, also in 12 rounds. That came early, on the 575-yard, par-5 2nd hole, but he settled down from there, making his birds on Nos. 9, 12 and 16. He had an eagle, 15 birdies (tied for fourth-most in the field) and 30 pars opposite six bogeys and two doubles, while playing the par-5's at 5-under, the par-4's at 4-under (fifth-best by all players) and the par-3's at 2-over.
Paxton has opened his second season as a Buffalo with 12 straight subpar rounds with four top 19 finishes (he owns a 336-28-11 record against the field this year, a .936 winning percentage. That's the third-longest streak in school history, behind two runs of 15 and 13 by May graduate, Dylan McDermott.
Freshman Tyler Long posted CU's best score of the day – a 4-under 68 that tied for the fourth-best overall in the final round – enabling him to finish with a 6-under 210 scorecard and tie for ninth, the best finish of his young career. He had five birdies and 12 pars with just one bogey, consistent across the board as he was 2-under on the par-4's and par-5's and even on the par-3's (6-under, 2-under and 2-over, respectively overall). The only Buff here to not record a score worse than bogey, he closed the tourney with 12 birdies, a team co-high of 36 pars and six bogeys. He now has seven straight rounds of par or better (six subpar, with a high score of only 74), and 10 out of 12 in his first collegiate semester.
Senior Hunter Swanson tied for 13th after a 4-over 74, which gave him a 5-under 211 total overall. He opened strong with birdies on Nos. 1 and 4, but dropped back to even at the turn following bogeys on Nos. 5 and 7. A rough stretch to open the back nine – bogey-double-bogey shot him up to 4-over, with back-to-back birdies late on Nos. 15 and 16 reducing some of the sting. He matched Knight on the round (four birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and a double), with 13, 24, six and one, respectively over the three rounds. He played the par-3's the best in the field at 3-under (which was also a career-best; he has been 2-under four times), the par-5's 2-under and was even on the par-4's. It did mark the fourth time in his career that he finished an event subpar or even on all hole configurations.
Junior Ty Holbrook tied for 48th after closing with an even-par 72 for a 4-over 220. He was 2-under through 13, starting strong with birdies on Nos. 1 and 6, but then finished his round "rollercoaster" style, with a double-bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie that dropped him back down to even. He had five birdies, nine pars, three bogeys and the double Saturday, wrapping here with eight birdies and matching Long with 36 pars. He was 6-under on the par-5's, 3-over on the par-3's and plus-7 on the par-4's. He did continue to play the par-5's perhaps like few in the nation; he birdied six of the 12 this week, and on the season, he has two eagles, 32 birdies, 12 pars and just two bogeys (34-under) on the 48 par-5's he's played this season (the closest Buff to him is Paxton, who has played the longer ones at 24-under, with Long at 23-under).
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera competed here as an individual (his scores did not count toward CU's team total), and he also tied for 13th with a 5-under 211 after closing with a 2-under 70. It was his fifth straight round of par or better (ninth on the season); in fact, he's averaging 69.8 strokes over those nine rounds, compared to 71.6 for the season overall. His card was rather symmetrical Saturday, with two birdies (Nos. 1, 2), then two bogeys (Nos. 4, 5), followed by two birdies (Nos. 6, 7), and then two bogeys (Nos. 11 and 14) and finally two birdies (Nos. 16,18); he made back-to-back pars just twice. He had a team-high six birdies in the final round (13 overall), with eight pars (35 total) with four bogeys – his five bogeys total tied for the sixth-fewest in the tourney. He played the par-5's at 6-under, the par-3's even and the par-4's at 1-over (the latter a season-best).
"The guys fought hard today," head coach Roy Edwards said. "The golf course played tougher. Tyler had a really nice round, and so did Jackson. I thought everybody really competed very well overall. It was another really nice finish by the team and a great way to start the season -- it's sort of crazy to think that the season is already a third over.
"Brandon and Parker had really good tournaments," he continued. "Hunter struggled today but fought hard and continues to be a great leader on and off the course. We really appreciated Dylan McDermott (four-year letterman who graduated last May) and his parents for coming out today after Dylan had a tough finish yesterday at Q-School. It was wonderful to have their support.
"I believe we are in a good spot and we look forward to having a great two weeks of practice preparing for the final trip of the fall to Maui."
Pacific's Felix Bouchard claimed medalist honors with a 12-under 204 score, the only player in the field to record three rounds in the 60's. He closed with a 69, one of just 10 in the field Saturday, but the only player to do so who came into the final round positioned in top 21. He bested teammate Deitrik Gill by one stroke.
Colorado has just one tournament left on its fall schedule, the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate, set for Oct. 27-29 in Lahaina, Maui.
NOTES: The weather here all three days featured temperatures between the mid-60's to mid-70's with sunny skies; the wind was negligible for the first round but at times over the last two days would occasionally broach 8-10 miles per hour … Eleven of the 17 teams in the field were from California … The average score for all 288 rounds was 73.35; it was the highest in the final round – 73.91 – after 72.52 Friday and 73.63 in the opening round … There were 29 players who finished under par and 2 others who wrapped with even-par scores … Fourteen of the 18 holes played over par; the Buffaloes held their own on the nine toughest, which in order were Nos. 17, 13, 8, 9, 18, 15, 14, 4 and 12: Pacific's scorers were 5-over combined, while CU's were 7-over. Colorado played those nine the best in the field Saturday at 1-over (UP was +2) … The five CU scorers played the par-4's tied for the second-best with San Diego in the field at 1-under (UP blew away the competition, at 24-under), the par-3's at 6-over (third; Cal Baptist led at 2-over) and the par-5's tied for fourth at 26-under (San Diego led the way at 31-under) … Colorado had the second-most birdies (62; Pacific had 73), and the eighth-most pars with 167 (Utah State ad with 181); the Buffs have the third-fewest bogeys (33 bogeys, UP the fewest with 25) and is tied for the fourth-fewest holes worse than bogey (6), though four of those came Saturday … This was the eighth straight subpar round as a team, and the 11th in 12 rounds thus far season; the school best of 29 was set last year, with 25 in 2017-18 the second-best (the school record is nine straight subpar rounds, with the record for rounds of par or better 17 in a row) … In Roy Williams Era at CU (20th season), the Buffaloes now have 249 subpar rounds; in the school's history before his arrival, Colorado had just 84 … Through 12 rounds this season, CU's scorers are an impressive 129-under par … Colorado's eight players have combined to play 87 rounds so far – 64 have been par or better (52 subpar, 12 even) with 33 rounds in the 60's – already tied for the seventh-most in school history (CU's senior dominated team had the record of 76 last year) … Paxton continues to lead CU in stroke average (69.0 for 12 rounds); the team's average for 87 rounds is 70.69 (last year's team set the fall record of 70.53) … Colorado was 15-1 here against Division I competition, improving to 54-6-2 (.887) after four meets; they finished 41-5-2 mark in single rounds here, improving to 148-29-9 (.820) on the season.
