Buffs Standing Tall With The Elite Teams At Stanford

October 18, 2025 | Women's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. – Colorado women's golf added another chapter to a memorable fall season Saturday, shooting a 5-under-par  second round at the Stanford Intercollegiate, keeping pace in a tournament filled with the nation's elite teams.

The 5-under round put Colorado in the red overall at 3-under through 36 holes at the 6,278-yard Stanford Golf Course. The No. 52-ranked Buffaloes are tied with second-ranked Southern California for seventh place, right in the middle of a six-team log-jam for a top-three spot.

Host and third-ranked Stanford shot its second-straight double-digit under par round and has a comfortable overall lead at 25-under, with No. 4 Oregon a distant second at 14-under.

No. 28 Arizona is in third at 5-under with three teams one stroke back at 4-under: No. 24 Arizona State, No. 25 UCLA, and No. 8 Pepperdine, with the Buffaloes and Trojans one behind them.

Colorado's 5-under, 279, stands as the second-best 18-hole team round on a par 71 course in team history and tied for seventh overall on any course layout. With Saturday's performance, the 2025-26 Buffaloes now hold three of the top 10 single-round scores since the program debuted in 1994.

"I'm so pleased with how the team played again today, once again just steady, a lot of confidence and poise," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said.

The Buffaloes benefited from a quick start, and that began with conquering the toughest hole on the course, the 383-yard par-4 10th, which played at nearly a stroke over par on Friday. With the start on the back nine, Colorado passed that early test with a birdie and four pars, setting the tone for the day from the outset.  The Buffaloes kept mistakes to a bare minimum with only nine holes from scoring golfers at bogey or higher.

"Starting on 10 in the morning usually provides a challenge, but the team handled it so incredibly well," Sheils said. "Getting through that hole at 1-under, I felt like that set us up for success the rest of the day."

Vanessa Ngo had Colorado's best round of the day, logging a career-low 67, moving into the team's overall lead through two rounds at 4-under. She is tied with six others for eighth place, four shots out of the lead.

"I'm so thrilled to see her hard work paying off," Sheils said. "She's been working hard on her game and knocking on the door for a long time. It's so rewarding to see that pay off with a great under-par score on a tough golf course and big-time competition. I'm excited to see where her game continues to grow."

Ngo got off to a fantastic start with birdies on three of her first four holes. For the second-straight day, Ngo defied the trends and birdied the 10th to begin her round, and she was off and running from there. Ngo slipped back to 2-under at the turn with a bogey at the 18th but rebounded immediately with a birdie at the first. She once again dropped to 2-under with a bogey at the sixth, but responded with back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth to finish her round.

"Starting (off well) early has been one of my biggest goals for the season," Ngo said. "I've had a track record of having tough starts and digging myself into holes early. So one of my main goals is to start tournaments well and it's been nice to see that for the last two days,"

Carolyn Fuller shot a second-round score of 3-under 68 to move into the top 20 as she enters Sunday tied for 19th at 2-under overall. She played the first 11 holes even before getting on a roll. Fuller brushed off a bogey at the second with a birdie on the 170-yard par-3 third. Fuller then logged back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh down the stretch to clinch her team-best third round in the 60s on the young season.

Teemapat Pateetin and Maya McVey both shot 1-over rounds of 72 on Saturday to round out the team scoring. Pateetin is tied for 48th overall at 4-over while McVey is two shots back, tied for 64th at 6-over.

Ellen O'Shaughnessy shot a 74 on Saturday and is tied for 37th overall at 1-over.

"We're going to keep doing what we've been doing, which is focusing on our process and what we can control, and let the results come as they may," Sheils said. "I'm so pleased with the position we've put ourselves in. It was fun to play with UCLA and Arizona the last two days because it was evident we can compete with them, a couple of great teams. We're excited to have a chance to try and put together another solid round tomorrow."

Stanford's Paula Martin Sampdero maintained her overall lead after logging a 68 on Saturday to move to 8-under overall, one stroke better than UCLA's Meghan Royal and two shots up on USC's Catherine Park.

Colorado will join UCLA, USC and Pepperdine for Sunday's final round with a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. MT. The groupings will begin between the fifth and eighth holes.
