Buffs Take Down IUPUI to Start Road Trip
February 01, 2025 | Tennis
Colorado with first 4-0 start since 2018.
INDIANAPOLIS – Colorado took care of business Saturday on the road at the West Indy Racquet Club as the Buffaloes rolled past IUPUI, 7-0, in their first of five straight road matches.
Colorado improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2018, without two top performers Aya El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic against IUPUI who dropped to 0-3 on the season.
Without two consistent members of the lineup, players were asked to take on new roles. The only player to have a match under their belt at today's position was sophomore Willow Gretch at No. 6 singles.Â
After playing with different partners last match against Colorado State, Lera Alexin and Pia Rebec took the court together, this time at No. 2 doubles. The pair felt at home, taking the first victory of the day.
Doubles saw a familiar duo at the top with No. 21 Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson adding another win, clinching the doubles point. They now sit at 16-2 overall on the year and 3-1 in the spring.Â
In singles, all six matches were won in straight sets.
Nelson played her first career singles dual match and picked up the opening point for singles after winning 6-0, 6-2.
Rebec added another point before Tokac clinched the match for her first time at No. 1 singles.
"Our group did a nice job of focusing in on the task at hand and taking care of business today," head coach Anthony Pham said on the day. "We now turn our focus towards a strong Illinois team tomorrow."
The Buffs kept playing and kept winning matches with Alexin, Gretsch, and Bubalo closing out the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
No. 2 doubles duo Alexin and Rebec, got the afternoon started quickly getting a win in the Buff's favor 6-1 against Chloe Bailey and Grace Lampman setting an early tone for the match.
At the top spot, Bubalo and Nelson also took care of business against Elle Kotre and Calli Sokolowski cruising to a 6-3 victory and clinched the doubles point to give Colorado an early 1-0 lead.
With the doubles point clinched the No. 3 position had its match unfinished between Gretsch and Tokac in their first match together and Hanan Awale and Emma Dell with a 4-3 lead in Colorado's direction.Â
In her first singles match of the spring, Nelson took the court against Lampman at No. 5 singles. She wasted no time getting off the court with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory to give the Buffs a 2-0 lead early on in singles.
Rebec was on her heels as she added another point for the Buffs behind a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Kotre.Â
For the second time this season, Tokac clinched the match for the Buffs only this time it came from No. 1 singles. Tokac cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bailey.
At No. 4 singles Alexin won her second straight match taking down Sokolowski 6-1, 6-1 to extend the lead to 5-0.
Opening her season, Gretch earned her first dual match win against Awale at No. 6 singles. After taking the first set 6-1, the second set came after battling but came out on top 7-5.
The final match of the day came courtesy of Bubalo at No. 2 singles, and she did not disappoint. In what looked like a runaway in the first set winning 6-0, the Jag's Dell would not go away easily. The second set came down to a tiebreaker and Bubalo took care of business 7-6 (4) to complete the sweep for Colorado.
